Guest guest
As an Eagle Scout, I have always supported the Explorer programs. We allowed explorers and high-school students (from a health professions program) into the emergency department and other areas of the hospitals. We established very strict rules for dress, language, behavior, privacy concerns, and so on. For the most part, the kids did great. In EMS, we had to be careful for them on dangerous scenes (crime and accident) and extremely careful about bloodborne pathogens. Sexual issues are always a possibility and not limited to EMS. Many physicians and nurses have ended up in tremendous trouble for developing even consensual sexual relations with patients. This stuff shouldn't happen. Three things will happen. The case will be proven to be bogus, or the defendants will claim it was consensual and they thought she was 18, or they will plead or be found guilty. The latter two possibilities will give EMS a very black eye in the eyes of Fort Worth citizens and those in general. I am sure the national news feeds will pick up this story and run with it. It is a shame this gets the press when we need to be focusing on improving EMS pay and benefits, professionalism, expanded treatment options, longevity and homeland security. People need to read my EMS Cowboys article again: http://www.jems.com/jems/e1003a.html Bledsoe, DO, FACEP Midlothian, TX Don't miss EMStock 2004! http://www.emstock.com Re: Paramedics Accused Of Sexually Assaulting 15-Year-Old This isn't MedStar's Explorer program's first " incident. Guest guest
Thank god it was heterosexual or it would look bad on the news and in court. Remember it could happen to any EMS service even yours. Re: Paramedics Accused Of Sexually Assaulting 15-Year-Old This isn't MedStar's Explorer program's first " incident. Guest guest
Here we go again; one step forward, two steps back. We can't afford this if we want to be considered professional. True this happens in other fields of endeavor, but when this occurs in EMS, it just reinforces previous prejudices and stereotyping. What happened to this young lady is inconscionable. Aside from the obvious lack of respect for this child's rights, it endangers 'explorer' type programs. These programs can be a source of future medics. Folks, we can't afford this. With projections of demand rising and medic populations decreasing, we can ill afford the loss of positive exposure. Guest guest
You are throwing the blame the wrong way and making a very bold statement (they set themselves up for failure). I take exception to that remark since I have had children associated with that organization, Girl and Boy Scouts of America, and I as well as a child. The family has trusted their daughter to a professional organization, Girl Scouts and MedStar, and probably never second guessed their decision. How many of you would have been offended if a parent questioned their child's safety with you??? Especially if they were concerned about their child being sexually assaulted or raped, what ever you want to call it. Be careful not to throw stones at the victim. She was a child that was to be guarded against all harm!! However, I will be following this story since I live in the area. This troubles me greatly and being a law enforcement officer and a paramedic for many years, this incident deserves the full ( and it will get ) attention of the FWPD, Tarrant County DA and TDH. Joby Berkley Re: Paramedics Accused Of Sexually Assaulting 15-Year-Old > Who or what parent in their right mind would sllep at night allowing their 15 year old daughter to be out at midnight. this company and the Girl Scouts set themselves up for failure. FWPD is very well versed in this sort of investigation, since they have an officer charged with the exact same conduct every couple of years. I personally know of two FWPD officers convicted of sexual assault on Explorers in the recent past. Funny thing is, we never see the media run with those cases. Can't wait to see if we get the same blind eye. Rob

Guest guest
I have over 32 years in the field working 24 hour shifts with male and female partners and have never even considered any thing like this would ever happen, much less with a child this is a terrible thing to happen to ems and that child. There is no excuse for the actions of those two men not even if it was consensual which cant happen with a minor who's care and safety the were entrusted with. Guest guest
Hey Wes, To begin with, a 15 y/o is not a woman, she is a teenager. I never said we're incapable of self control. Temptation is what it is. All I am saying is that this unfortunate incident should not be blamed on the medics alone. The guilty ones are actually the Girl Scouts, Med Star, and the parents. Now taking that the story is accurate as written, the D.O. of Med Star should be out of a job. To even allow a 15 y/o female teenager to be with an all male crew at 0200 is just stupid. I can just hear the excuse, the crew was posting and was unable to return to station. She should have been with a crew that had at least one female. We all know in a case like this that accusation are enough to ruin your career. If these events are not true, these medics careers are ruined. The girl scouts should be out selling cookies or whatever it is they do and leave the ride outs to actual high school medical programs. How many boy scouts are riding out? And the parents, hmmm..... I have a daughter and I guarantee she will not be out past 9 p.m. without me knowing her whereabouts. Guest guest
Joby by saying they set themselves up for failure I am referring to Medstar. You have to be at least 17 to ride out on a bus in my service. Someone that youn would be riding out with a supervisor. Guest guest
The bottom line is the whole situation could have been avoided. Some female/male crews can and do avoid temptation. All depends on your upbringing and your moral values. But some individuals cannot resist temptation. Everyone involved here should take a portion of blame not just the medics. And as stated before, it took this girl a few days to complain. Who knows, she may have initiated something that led to this. Accusations are enough, this is why most companies with any sense at all avoid these situations by placing someone like this to a crew that is all female or male/female. JUST TO AVOID THESE SITUATIONS. Guest guest
Every profession has its predators. Look at the Catholic Church. A priest would be the last person anyone would suspect. But it happens. The fact remains that first, we do not know if these guys are guilty. Second, if they are, they need to go to jail and pay for their crimes as well as receive some psychotherapy. Third, if the girl is not telling the truth, it will not be the first time this has happened and the guys deserve an apology. I really do not think a 15 year old should be out in the middle of the night anyway. Is there not a curfew for minors? Of course this is my opinion, but I would not let my daughter out at those hours. But, this is my opinion. KBR Kuwait arturo.longoria@... www.emsforlife.com davidemtp@...
