The Bone Injection Gun, a/k/a B.I.G.

Anyone already using them?

Comments, concerns?

We have added it, so I guess this is asking a bit late, but just curious

about any thoughts from anyone already using them, or comments from those

who choose not to use them.

Regards,

Mike

We at Humble Fire Dept. are using the Fast 1 and love it.

We had it too, but it never got used, the advantage to the BIG is the

adaptability of places to use it, the FAST 1 is limited to the sternum

and in adults only. The BIG can be used tibia (Adults and peds), humerus

head (adults and peds) medial maleulous and distal radius (adults), and

they are looking at utilizing it in the clavicle as well.

The needle is spring loaded and is inserted in an average of 0.02

seconds (this is not inclusive of prep time etc) and can infuse at a

rate equal to a large bore IV. The insertion time for pediatrics is a

lot faster than the standard IO needle, and the BIG can be used on

conscious people.

Cost is minimal as well, the FAST1 is about 100.00 give or take, and the

BIG is 39.00 give or take.

The BIG pedi is adjustable for depth for age differences.

I am as of today, and advocate, but I have yet to shoot myself in the

hand with one either....:)

Haha! Any stories of that happening? If it can happen, it will happen.

When the disposable skin staplers were pretty new, I saw quite a few

instances of physicans grabbing the wrong end and stapling their own hands.

The only bad story I have heard to date on the BIG is of a physician (no

implications) that shot himself in the thumb.....:)

There have been a few misfires, but no one else was hit to my knowledge.

We want to try playing darts with them, but the boss says we have to

wait until they expire.
