"Many people can't even fathom that we live in a society that is so cold and callous against mothers that they are deterred from getting jobs simply because they have children. But just because it isn't happening to you, doesn't mean it isn't happening. And that's the truth of it. When people start talking about these issues and realizing how backwards we can be in terms of keeping up with the times, then changes will happen," says Kiki Peppard, to those who are astonished to hear this fact. We need your help to fight back against this rampant, unfair, discriminatory practice—starting in Pennsylvania, where Kiki has been working hard to pass a law to protect mothers from hiring discrimination. Moving forward in Pennsylvania could open the flood gates for change across the nation. We need your help to do this. *Send each and every state legislator in Pennsylvania The Motherhood Manifesto book and a ruler imprinted with "Moms More Than Measure Up," to underscore that we need to protect mothers from hiring and wage discrimination by clicking here: https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1768/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=2793 *Moms More Than Measure Up! Please forward this email to friends! On October 2nd, we'll be descending on the Pennsylvania State Legislature to support two bills that would protect mothers and other people with family responsibilities from hiring discrimination. Passing this law in Pennsylvania is good for both Pennsylvania and the nation. Fact is, most states don't have effective hiring discrimination protection for mothers. We look forward to building on success in Pennsylvania to achieve success across the country. This issue is real! Many of us have had our eyes opened by Kiki Peppard's story, which opens the Motherhood Manifesto book and film. Kiki shared how when she moved to Pennsylvania, despite having excellent references and a strong resume, she was asked repeatedly in job interviews if she was married and if she had children—and each time after answering, "Yes," she was denied employment. She discovered, to her surprise and ours, that this happens all the time. We'll be going to the Pennsylvania state capitol to help pass a law that would end this kind of discrimination. (If you live in Pennsylvania, see below for information about joining us in burg on October 2nd). *Has this happened to you? Have you ever been denied a job or a promotion because you are a mom? Share your story! Help build understanding about why this is so damaging to families and must be stopped by sharing your story on our blog for all to read at: http://www.momsrising.org/node/577 (If you're interested in us contacting you in the future to share your story with other MomsRising members, leaders, and possibly even the media, click here: http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/momsrising/questionnaire.jsp?questionnaire_KEY=385 ) Best - Joan, , Kiki, , , and P.S. Do these numbers seem too horrible to be true? The data that shows mothers are 79% less likely to be hired than non-mothers with equal resumes because comes from a study published in the American Journal of Sociology entitled: "Getting a Job: Is There a Motherhood Penalty?" by J. Correll, Benard, and In Paik of Cornell University. In addition to revealing this level of discrimination in hiring practices, Dr. J. Correll has also documented the extent to which mothers are offered lower starting salaries, fathers are offered higher starting salaries, and how mothers are held to harsher performance standards than non-mothers. P.P.S. If you have friends in Pennsylvania, let them know about the rally and deliveries! Info below: We need your help in burg, Pennsylvania on October 2nd and hope you can join us: WHAT: Show the Pennsylvania State Legislature that Moms More Than Measure Up! We'll be delivering The Motherhood Manifesto book, and a ruler with "Moms More Than Measure Up - Stop Discrimination" to every Pennsylvania Senator and Representative. There will be lots of ground to cover, so we hope you can come lend a hand! WHEN: October 2, 2007 TIME: 10:00 a.m. WHERE: Capitol Rotunda, burg, Pennsylvania RSVP: cooper@... Did you know that in Pennsylvania women can still be discriminated against at work, in housing and access to public accommodations, because of marital and family status? For example, today, Pennsylvania employers may refuse to hire or promote women (or men) with families or other caregiver responsibilities, or otherwise discriminate against them even if their responsibilities do not interfere with their work. Please join us at the State Capitol and stand up against this dangerous form of discrimination, and speak out for women's equal rights to legislators. The PA Human Relations Act was established in 1955, and it is long past time to amend it to reflect modern society, where the majority of women are working both inside and outside the home and deserve to be measured equally. Legal protection from family responsibility and marital status discrimination is an essential if women are to receive equality, especially at work. We will gather in the Capital Rotunda to urge legislators to act now to protect women and other family caregivers from discrimination and to demand passage of HB280 & SB280—amendments to the PA Human Relations Act to outlaw marital or familial status discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. Join us for a press conference/rally with several distinguished speakers, including Representative Dally, Senator Orie, and representatives of the PA Human Relations Commission, the PA Commission for Women, the National Organization for Women, MomsRising.org and 9to5 National Association of Working Women. Following the rally, we'll visit our legislators throughout the Capitol to communicate our powerful message, that it is time to put a stop to maternal and family responsibility profiling in Pennsylvania. Together we CAN and we WILL make a difference for our families by changing the law today. We need YOUR help! Please RSVP to Munroe at cooper@...
