Guest guest
Hi All, I am writing this e-mail to ask for any input you might have at your own departments regarding patrol trainee orientations. One of our sergeants supervises the training, and one area he wants to improve is radio communication. A way he has been approaching this objective is by having patrol trainees sit in the communications center for a few hours and observe the dispatchers performing their duties. During this time, dispatchers explain what they are doing, and are free to answer any questions the patrol trainees might have. Recently I have been meeting with the sergeant regarding possible improvements to this section of the training program, and he seemed to like the two suggestions I made. The first was to have the processes explained in a classroom-style setting prior to having trainees observe the dispatchers in action, so that they will have more of an idea about what they're seeing. The second suggestion was to create some printed materials they can keep in their training notebooks to use as a frame of reference during and after training. If anyone has any input regarding approaches your departments take toward teaching your officers about the processes involved in your dispatch centers, I would appreciate your help. I am also asking for assistance within the agency, but as much information as I can get would greatly assist the project. Thanks.
