Sorry, I should add that we are not open to or viewable by the public and we

average 15 to 18 people working per shift.....

Hi,

Serious question this time. But before that, Happy November! Halloween at work

wasn't bad at all....

We are trying to decide what we should be allowed to do at our workstations when

business is slow. So, if you would let me know if you are allowed to use things

like laptops, ipods, iwhatevers, board games, cards....basically anything other

than reading newspapers/magazines.

Oh, and I really need responses before noon on Thursday, November 2.

Thanks,

Bob

Depending on the shift we're allowed to read, play cards, board games, lap

tops, game boys, etc.... Some of the girls on evenings & mids crochet or cross

stitch. As long as it doesn't interfere w/our work it hasn't been a problem.

We can do basically anything here that isn't disruptive to the office or

our jobs. We have a TV - and can watch what we want. If its a problem

with the work going on someone will say something.....not once have we

had a problem with it in 4 yrs +. We have folks who knit, listen to

music, talk on their personal cell phones, do homework, do puzzles

(sudoku, crosswords), surf the net, etc. We also have free reign on the

internet (and no one has abused that one.....) so we can shop (helpful

at holiday time) and do other things. We have a visiting dog every now

and again (dispatch or patrol for extended shift work). It bears

mentioning that except for about 12 hrs a week of overlap, we work by

ourselves. We do have lobby contact with the public.

Thanks so far to those who have responded. Keep 'em comin'..

Had to respond to the dog comment, though.......Years back, a/an/one employee

complained about getting a flea bite while one of the k9 officers was in with

his dog. Zip/Bang/Boom...all animals, commissioned or not were banned from the

center!!

I would say any of that stuff is okay except for the ipod.

I wouldn't want my dispatchers listening to music on an ipod and not

hearing the phone ring or a radio call.

We can pretty much do everything else on the list you mentioned.

Oops, sorry - just noticed you needed the response before noon today.

And it's almost 1700 here...

Just wondering why not reading? We can read, do cross stitch, crocheting,

scrapbooking and other none messy crafts (ok sometimes messy too). We can also

watch movies as long as we mute/pause them when a call comes in we can either

use works computers, or bring in laptops or portable movie players for this. We

also have listednt to music using the computers at work, same goes for that as

movie's tv, must mute when calls coming in.

Our supervisors says anything is ok as long as it doesn't interfer with our

work, but here lately we just have time to work it has been so busy. Of course

we run with just one on duty most of the time. My thing to do while I am

working on paperwork is to listen to a movie playing.

With books - you get so tied up in the story you don't know what's going

on around you - or you just want to finish the paragraph or sentence

before you take that call...

No reading would come from an administration that gives us the responsibility of

saving lives, but not being able to set down a book. It's hypocritical and

insulting. They fail to realize that an active mind is the best thing to have

in a dispatch environment, not a dead mind staring at a computer screen.

My Director is still in the dark ages in some aspects, such as saying we do not

need a TV. Although a TV in a dispatch center serves many useful roles. We can

read, do crafts, play single person games like hand held or solitaire on the

computer. We also have internet access on a stand alone PC.

Remember many of the " directors " have never sat on our side of the radio. Many

sit on the other side.
