Guest guest
Hi Sheila! Thank you for sending me your message. I decided to stop the goat yogurt after I noticed that one of them was putting his fingers in his mouth. I knew the only new thing that I had given them was the goat yogurt. They are not having any yogurt for now. And the curious thing is that has stopped doing it. A friend told me to start giving them nut yogurt. Do you think that it will be a good idea? My boys have been on the SCD since February 17/04. I appreciate your comment. Guest guest
Hi , I don't have any personal experience with the nut yogurt. Others have and have seen good results. Hopefully they will chime in. If I recall correctly you started with 1 teaspoon of yogurt. The usual amount we recommend is 1/4 teaspoon (especially for those who have had problems with dairy in the past). If you decide to try yogurt again (nut, goat, cow or camel) please start with the small amount first and slowly increase skipping a day or two in between. The die-off with yogurt can be pretty powerful and that's why we recommend the slow start for some. The fingers in mouth may be part of die-off but is hard to say without more information. Did both of your boys doing the fingers in mouth. Did you see any positive reactions? Did they have any change in bm's, change in behaviours (good or bad)? Guest guest
Fingers in mouth could be more 'stimmy' behavior due to die-off from yogurt. One great oral stimulation, for Luke, is to let him chew ice or chew something rubbery and hard. His stimminess increased with die-off but then was all but GONE after a while. So you'll have to decide whether to weather it out or not. in NC Mom of Luke, age 5, Asperger's/low-salicylate; , age 3; and , 21 mos All SCD since 1/26/04 Re: No more hands in my son's mouth... Guest guest
Hi Sheila: I stopped giving my sons the goat yogurt and I am planning to give them coconut yogurt, but next week. I will keep in mind your advice. You know, it is very hard to do this diet because I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. But I love it, because I can see a lot of good things that it has brought to my family. I have seen a lot of changes in my boys. Simon is not having constipation problems. For example, the last 5 days he had his BMs everyday and without any problem. Today he didn't have any BM but I am sure that he will do it tomorrow. I am not worried for now and I am crossing my fingers that I never will be again. After we started the SCD he is talking and playing a lot more. He still has some problems like playing with his fingers and doing some wierd movements. He was not able to tell me what it meant. But now he can tell me. He says that it is a door and he is opening it. Other times, he is making some sounds like singing a song to himself or humming. And his behavior has improved a lot too. has never had any problem with his BMs (thank you God!) but we noticed that he was putting his fingers in his mouth. After I read a message from a mom having a same problem with her son, it made me feel that it was the yogurt that was causing the problem. I stopped it and the problem disappeared. It took two days or so for him to stop doing it. He stopped completey flapping his hands but he is still moving his hands, like moving them in front of his face. He has improved a lot too. He is talking more and more every day and he loves to play as well. It is so funny because I talk with them in Spanish and he said to me " mom, don't talk Español, please " I will talk with you soon. Guest guest
Hi : Thank you for your answer. I prefer to wait and introduce coconut yogurt. I was so scared when I saw him doing it. I will try again the next week. You take care, ( & Simon 4 yo) SCD 02-1704 > Fingers in mouth could be more 'stimmy' behavior due to die-off from yogurt. Guest guest
Hola , That's wonderful!!! Sounds like the diet is helping a lot. We are not seeing much changes for our son in language and behavior. We have been giving the beet puree to ease the constipation but still get the marble sized poops but softer. Someone on another list mentioned that beet juice reduces the acid in the stomach which doesn't allow for the digestion of minerals or proteins. Now the beet puree is a big concern since it he needs to be digesting and assimilating both the minerals and proteins. Our son's urine is pink from the beets which is a sign that there isn't enough acid in the stomach according to this person. So now what?? I did finally get my juicer a few days before Easter, so I am giving him some fresh juiced Pear juice (at lunch time instead of the OJ/Prune juice) but have not seen improvements in the stool yet. I'll keep plugging away at this. Thanks for the update on and Simon. How are you going to make the coconut yogurt?? Do you use the milk inside the coconut or do you grate the meal on the inside of the coconut and add water to that to make coconut milk and then do the yogurt with that? Let me know when you have the time. Take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA > > Hi , > > > > I don't have any personal experience with the nut yogurt. Others > have and > > have seen good results.
