Guest guest
I now feel I will have to maintain > this diet for life in order to not be fat. I was talking to a lady I > work with that is on the South Beach Diet. She has been on it for > about a month and is really losing weight. , When I started SCD I had already lost 86 pounds and was obsessed with keeping it off. I have Celiac Disease and lifelong obesity challenges and expressed that to Elaine and repeatedly on the Long Island list for adults following SCD. It took me a while to accept that HEALTH IS THE PRIORITY. SCD was not designed for weight loss. Specific Carbohydrates are not necessarily those one would eliminate for South Beach or Atkins weight loss diets. I recall even correcting a doctor who criticized SCD because he didn't grasp that we don't limit " carbs " , but restrict the TYPE we can use. My experience with low carbohydrate diets is the weight lost rapidly returns plus more unless one elects to low carb for life. Your wish to attain a normal healthy weight is totally understandable and I empathize. It is your call as to how you want to control your weight. However IMO, it is unfair to judge SCD as a weight loss diet. Carol F. Celiac Adult SCD 2 3/4 years. There is no substitute for the right food. Guest guest
Carol, I found your comments about low carb diets to be very interesting but I think that you misunderstood 's comments. has been a very valiant defender of SCD on other lists. She has come to the defense of SCD when it was attacked unfairly. She has also been a great help on this list. Mimi > I now feel I will have to maintain > > this diet for life in order to not be fat. Guest guest
Carol, I am not judging SCD as a weight loss diet. The primary reason I am on it is in support of my 2 celiac sons. I am seeing benefits beyond weight loss such as increased energy, reduced cravings, not getting sick as easily, no more cancer sores, easier stools and the list goes on. When I first went on the diet I was seeing signs of yeast die- off. I seem to remember reading in BTVC, Elaine talked about how once the yeast is under control and the body is healed, one should be able to have occasional complex carbs with no problems. I think I have a yeast problem but not much damage to heal so I would think the length of time until I would be able to occasionally eat without ill affects should be shorter than those on the diet to heal damage as well. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea how long that could be. > I now feel I will have to maintain > > this diet for life in order to not be fat. I was not critical and said her weight loss choices are entirely up to her. I have 60 years of experience with personal weight challenges and although I attained a normal weight before SCD it has kept my weight very stable for nearly three years as Elaine mentioned it can do. If is able to fine tune SCD to her purpose without sacrificing optimum nutrition that would be wonderful. Back one day and in hot water already? Sigh :-) Carol F. Celiac Adult SCD 2 3/4 years. Conventional cheesecake sits well but one bite of a commercial cookie and the pain begins. After a few trials I realized my taste preferences have been almost totally converted to SCD foods and I will not be uncomfortable if it must be a forever thing. Carol F.
