I am also new, I don't have any experience with sweeteners... except

I use a little tablet of saccharine in my black coffee. My son is

just taking honey or fruitsauce as sweetener.

As far as fruit juice, I read here somewhere that the only legal ones

are Welsch white and red grape juice, because there is no guarantee

that the other brands do not add corn syrup on occasions...

Good luck!!!

Hi Mariko, Welcome to the group. Do you give your daughter fruitsauce (like

pear or mango, apple, etc.) I always mix supplements in some of that and it

does fine. Kirkman's syrup is illegal. Go the www.pecanbread.com for a lot

of info. Check under supplements and it shows all of Kirkman's legal and

illegal products. You can use saccharin or I think stevia as a sweetener.

Also go to www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and go the legal/illegal list

and it shows everything from A-Z. There are a lot of store brand juices that

are legal. Welch's white and grape juice in the bottles, Dole Pineapple,

Tomato juice, Knudsen Just Juices, and I also give the juice from boiled

fruit and it's pretty good. Good luck, check at the pecanbread website for a

lot of intro. advice as well.

I think some put there children meds supplements in applesauce,

pearsauce, homemade juice flavoured gelatin to mask the flavours.

If they are crushable you may be able to put them in some diluted

juices also.

Many people with food sensitivites find that after some time on the

diet- after the gut has healed some, they lose their food

sensitivities. This is not the case with anaphylactic reactions.

Glycerin as a supplement ingredient is okay but is not recommended

in larger quantities as a sweetener. Here is what Elaine wrote

previously on glycerin , " Now that I realize where you folks

are using the glycerin (instead of

honey), if you are not making sufficient progress and are using

glycerin

freely, please experiment with it by cutting it out and using

something else

like sucaryl or saccharin (even if they are not absolutley Kosher) I

am

concerned about glycerol. I know what it is and although it ends

in " ol " it

is not a sugar alcohol (which would cause diarrhea) but I still don't

know

how it will affect the gut. "

Her diet has been very low in refined

> sugar. I only used stevia and glycerin exclusively. Is Kirkman's

Sucralose is not legal so I guess that eliminates the Kirkman's

syrup. Stevia is also not recoommended for SCD please see

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/stevia.htm

Tropicana pure orange juice, Welch's 100% grape juice, tomato juice

('s and Heinz) have all been given the thumbs up. There may

be more but my brain is connecting today.

Hope this helps you get started.

Hi Mariko and welcome!

Saccharin is a legal sweetener and I believe stevia is okay, if you

absolutely cannot tolerate honey.

Welch's Grape Juice in the bottle is legal (both light and dark).

I do not know much about supplements, but I believe the Kirkman's

Syrup is illegal. If you have any other supplements you are not

sure of, visit www.pecanbread.com and there is an entire page

dealing with legal/illegal supplements. There is tons of

information on the website, with great recipes.

From Elaine's web site The Legal / Illegal list O to S

....Stevia Illegal It's molecular structure resembles a steroid and the effects

are unknown.

Hi, everyone,

I am very new to SCD. Please help me get started!

My child cannot swallow capsules just yet. She has to chew on them. So I must

sweeten

with something. That's why I used to make mock yogurt with tapioca and stevia

before

SCD, modified from Karyn Serrousi's ersatz yogurt. NOw that it is illegal, I

need alternative

sweetener. The catch is my child has IgG reactions to honey. I have been using

vegetable

glycerin. Her diet has been very low in refined sugar. I only used stevia and

glycerin

exclusively. Is Kirkman's syrup legal? That has sucralose, which they claim

does not feed

bacteria.

I had not given my child any fruit juice for the last 20 months. However, I

started with

white and dark grape juice with gelatin as a part of intro diet. I just have a

nagging

question, though. Has anybody checked which juice brands, national or

store-brands, are

legal?

Thanks for your help!

-Hello Mariko, welcome to the list!

Glycerin is legal. On Stevia I read a post a while back that

mentioned that there was a concern for adults due to its chemical

composition similar to an steroid, but that Elaine had said that for

ASD children in small quantities it would be OK.

For a list of legals/illegals you can check www.scdiet.info and/or

www.pecanbread.com . This second one has even a list of legal

kirkmans supplements.

For juice brands, just refer back to the BTVC (the book)

Good luck
