Hi Amy,

I am sad to hear your cat is going through the same thing as Dozer. Like I

said to Cy, I hope that you can also take some comfort in knowing that you and

your family have given Trillian a blessed life filled with love and comfort

too.

Thank you ,

She is not long for this Earth, it will be a miracle if she makes it thru

the night. She is our cat who has been thru 3 houses, 2 babies, and numerous

ups and downs. She will be dearly missed.

I'm sorry about the cat :(

Hope you are doing well though.

Amy, I think I've said this before and maybe it wasn't a post to you, but since

this disease announced itself I've had more problems thinking. I even had to

change my field of study to something easier so I could get a degree. After the

prednisone, I noticed it did get worse. My thoughts tend to wander. I can't

stay on task, or quite frankly I'm so beat, I fall asleep. I had a late class

this past semester and actually started snoring!!! I was so embarrassed. So

maybe it is the steroids or just another pesky side effect of the disease

itself. Jen

Re: Prednisone and mental function?

Amy,

How frustrating to have the problems with mental function. I do think

memory

becomes more problematic as you get closer to end stage renal disease. My

husband has been telling me I am forgetting more things lately too.

I only took Prednisone for a very short period a couple of summers ago, 2000

or 2001, I can't remember :-), so I am not sure if it is Prednisone related

or

not.

It is sure worth a call to your doctor though to ask.

Paradoxically, some people on prednisone report feeling more alert. I guess

it can go both ways.

I was never on prednisone except for a couple of times for asthma (only 5

days at a time). It made me very jittery, no doubt about that.

As I posted before, advanced renal failure (pre-dialysis or after), does

cloud the mind somewhat. It's a known symptom of uremia. The good news is

that everyone I've talked to who had a transplant says that it all comes

back.

Pierre when you say " advanced renal failure " just what sort of advancement are

we talking about here? I know I'm well below that 50% mark and I have a lot of

damage but what sort of numbers are we talking about? I know each person reacts

differently to decline and some can last much longer than others so maybe it's a

question that can't be answered in a precise manner.

I have been feeling more " off " over the past few weeks and my serum creatinine

was back up to a 2.2 when they checked for my electrolyte imbalance.

Thanks Amy

Hi Amy.

I always use the same definitions I have on the Renal Failure Notebook

section of my website:

http://www.igan.ca/id3.htm

In terms of renal failure alone, leaving out any other issues, and except

for blood pressure and possibly fatigue, it takes pretty severe impairment

for us to start feeling uremic symptoms. A lot of the things people feel

before are more likelty to be medication side effects (we shouldn't

underestimate what BP meds are capable of doing to us in terms of side

effects, and that's not even including other drugs like prednisone, etc.).
