Guest guest
I know that for me, my urine output has definitely decreased. I can go up to 9-12 hours between urinating. I am not sure if that is with all kidney patients as renal function declines, or just with me, but at least I have certainly noticed it. Guest guest
Jeez, if that happens to me, the amount of fluid I drink, I'll end up with fluid retention so bad I'll look like the Michelin Man Well, I guess we could put a positive spin on that in that you won't have to use those horrible toilets on any long flights?? > I know that for me, my urine output has definitely decreased. Guest guest
That IS a positive :-) I do travel extensively on business, usually 2-3 times a month, and that is a definite plus! Guest guest
I think it really depends on how functional the renal tubules are. By itself, glomerular damage affects more what is filtered into the urine, rather than the amount of urine produced. So you end up putting out a very clean urine that has nothing in it but water. But most people also develop some tubular damage (the renal tubules are part of each nephron, along with the glomeruli), and that affects urine output directly. Another factor is sodium intake and the kidney's ability to regulate sodium levels. The more sodium there is in the body, the more water is retained on purpose to keep the concentration of sodium at a certain level. When I started dialysis 13 months ago, I was voiding about 1 litre per day. Now I'm down to about 1/2 to 3/4 of that. But it's extremely sensitive to my sodium intake. If I eat too much salt, but drink the same amount of fluid (my restriction being 1.5 litres/day), I hold more of the fluid in. In that case, from one dialysis treatment to the next, I can put on 2+ kilograms of weight. But if I really watch the salt in the foods I eat, I sometimes go in only 1 kg over my dry weight. 1 litre of water is equivalent to 1 kg of weight.
