Hi Dave,

Missing part of a void during a 24 hour urine can skew the results,

especially if there was quite a bit of urine that was not collected. Patients

are

advised to completely restart the collection with a new jug if the miss a void

all

together. I guess it depends on how much you were not able to collect.

Normal serum creatinine levels vary according to body mass, but for me (5

feet 6 inches, 120 pounds) my normal would be about 0.7 or 0.8. A male has more

body mass, so your normal might be higher than that. Serum creatinine is just

a measurement of kidney function. Creatinine is a normal byproduct of muscle

breakdown, but when kidney function is impaired, levels in the serum are

higher than it would normally be if the kidneys were functioning at 100% simply

because the kidneys are no longer filtering creatinine out of the blood as they

should be.

On protein, it should be less than 150 mg/24 hours. Hopefully you will find

your protein is very low.

On the blood tests you had done a few months ago, it all depends on if your

doctor specifically checked creatinine. Sorry I can't answer that question,

but you may want to inquire next time you see him. Typically, creatinine would

not be checked unless the doctor specifically requested it.

Finally, please do not apologize for the questions. That is precisely why we

are here, so please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

For your reference, I will post a web site with some good information on lab

tests here as well.

Thanks for that. It really was a fairly small amount of urine that I missed -

the funny thing was I wondered how I'd ever fill that thing and by bedtime was

getting a little nervous that it might not be big enough! If I have to do it

again, so be it but I was hoping for some kind of indication when I see the

doctor - I did make sure that the nurse knew to tell him.

The reason I wondered about previous blood tests was that they were done with

kidneys in mind but, yeah I'll check with him on that too.

You just had to show off your weight/height huh? :o)))

Take care

Dave

I think you guys must just have better kidney function. I can barely make it

a little over half way with a jug in 24 hours, but then again my kidney

function is fairly compromised now.

I say count your blessings :-)

LOL! Pierre I have to get two jugs every time I have to do a 24 hour

collection, and I almost fill both of them. The lab techs always look

at me funny when I ask for a second jug normally saying ¡ÈMost people

have trouble filling one¡É ¡Ä.then they are glad I did when I drop

them

both off full the next day. :-)

Dave,

That ish beer must be a fine diuretic :)

In 25 years, I never even came close to filling a jug on a 24 hour urine

collection.

You know, I don't remember how large the jugs were. I never really paid much

attention to it at the time, other than making sure of my aim :)

2 litres seems like cutting it close though, since many people with an

average fluid intake could be expected to urinate up to 2 litres per day.

Well Dave, at least you know you're not retaining fluid...

will get the results of last week's blood draw and 24 hour urine.

everyone keep your fingers crossed! i will keep you posted.

I don't think it's the kidney disease, usually anyway. Generally, people

would urinate less as they advance to towards dialysis. People with mild

IgAN just pee normally. There can be rare cases where the part of the

kidneys that concentrates urine becomes damaged, in which case the person

would pee more and more often.

The more you drink, the more you urinate, so some of you are probably

drinking more than you're thirsty for.

Pierre

RE: 24 hour urine

I have to use 2 jugs too, do we drink to much liquid or is it from the

kidney disease ?

Well, I'll certainly know next time to ask for two before I start -

was kinda embarassing walking into the waiting room with once covered

in a bag, two will be even worse!! lol

Well without getting too technical, the jug I got was shaped in such

a way that aim wasn't too important ;o)

Pity about fluid retention argument, I was hoping to use that as an

excuse for the little pot belly I seem to have developed in recent

months (rather than the comfort eating I've been doing!)

It's funny how so many of us are embarrassed walking in with a jug of urine

in a bag. We've had discussions of this before, when we didn't have much

else to talk about, I guess :)

I was similarly embarrassed the first few times i did it, but, nothing

embarrasses me anymore. After a few times, I started walking in there with

the attitude, yes, I'm a kidney patient, and I'm proud :)

So has your urine output deceased as kidney function has

deteriorated? Is this how things normally progress?

Little did I imagine a few months ago that I'd soon be having

detailed discussion with people in message Boards about the quantity

of urine we produce!

If you ever retain water from kidney failure, it will be more in your legs

and feets than in your stomach, but you don't have to tell anyone and ruin

your excuse :)

You're absolutely right, of course but human emotions don't always

follow the path of logic :o)

I've been laughing right along with this thread...it has been even more

humorous since I just finished a 24 hour collection this morning! My

husband was joking about how it's easy to diet when there are 2 jugs of

urine in the fridge! I've helped him fast before the holiday I guess.

:)

I'll let everyone know how this latest test turns out on Monday when I

go to the neph. It's the first one I've had done since starting on the

steroids at the beginning of October. I had lots of blood work done

too, so I'll get to see if my cholesterol has come down at all since

July....hope, hope, hope.

RE: 24 hour urine

This is a pretty funny thread here... I can't think of many places we

can all laugh about how much we pee! It is kind of funny - both my

sisters were " competing " to see who had the better volume when they were

testing - talk about your " pi & & ing match " .

Eeek, I didn't put mine in the fridge I just tucked it discreetly

away in the bathroom - was this wrong?

Normally I am instructed to refrigerate the urine. You might check with the

lab next time to see if they want you to refrigerate it or not.

Me too, or at least, keep it cool. Once, when I was hospitalised and I had

to collect urine for 24 hours, the jug was kept in a pan of ice in my

bathroom. There's no preservative in the jug for a regular 24 hour urine

(although there is for some other kinds of 24 hour urine collections), so

you should keep it cool. I'm not absolutely sure of this, but I think it's

mostly a matter of bacteria proliferating faster in a warm environment. I

once did a 24 hour that somehow became fouled with bacteria, and I had to

redo it.
