Am I confusing cultures with probiotics, Hi Tina, In BTVC Elaine does recommend yogurt and the probiotic. The yogurt contains many good bugs, possibly enough to keep things balanced, but some people prefer to use legal probiotics AND yogurt. Others do only one or the other. Many of our families are doing dairy-free SCD, so they use the legal CP probiotic to get more good bacteria in the gut. Some people here are doing both (although I haven't really heard of any that are doing it by adding the probiotic directly to the yogurt??). I think it may be a personal choice. son - 5yo on 5/5, ASD, SCD one year

Homemade yogurt has *plenty* of lively bacterial cultures. According to a count done by Seth and confirmed by two others a tablespoon of SCD yogurt contains approximately 3 billion colony forming units (CFU's)/ml of yogurt. So if you have a tablespoon of yogurt multiply by about 15. That's lots of bacteria In a probiotic, capsule/powder form (that is not yogurt) Elaine reccomends only a maximum of 3 billion cfu's/day. http://www.pecanbread.com/probiotics.html Am I confusing cultures with probiotics, I > thought they were the same thing? The cultures are the bacteria that are in both probiotics (capsules, powders) and in yogurt. Hope that helps clear it up.
