Guest guest
I just came back from a 2 1/2 hour IEP meeting for my 4 1/2 year old autistic son. My head is still spinning. As most of you all have probably experienced, my son's ABA, speech, physical & occupational therapists were there as well as his special ed teacher. It was very interesting hearing them talk about the progress he has made last year and what they anticipate him to be able to do over the next year. One of the things that has stood out is each therapist has said at least once something about his rapid change in improvement in the " last few months " . Gee, I wonder why! The tone of this meeting was also quite different from the last 3 IEP's. Before the discussion has been focused on trying to get him to do survival life skills with the underlying assumption that he will most likely always be way below his peers. This time there was much discussion of him catching up with his peers. At the end of the meeting I decided to ask the question that had been eating at me. I asked them what their " opinion " is based on the progress they have seen over the years about how long it may potentially take him to catch up with his peers if he was progressing at the same rate. Of course they hemmed and hawed and didn't want to answer but I felt they gave a fairly honest answer. They said he will probably always be behind but could eventually catch up to the point that others may not know. They said he is very intelligent but at this point just lacks the motivation to succeed. His speech therapist said she now has no doubt he will be talking but again can't know quite yet to what degree. Overall it was quite positive. I feel the change in tone and emphasis is mainly due to switching from GFCFSF to SCD. My son started the SCD diet December 1st. I did the intro for 2 days then fed him whatever foods are allowed without regards to stages (mainly due to the fact I was not aware of the stages at the time). I waited a couple months before giving him whole nuts and have not yet given him beans or bean flours. At first I was giving him pineapple but realized it was giving him horrible diaper rash so I discontinued and it has cleared up. His stools have firmed up within the first week and he has only had diarrhea when he had the flu. I have given him the legal SCD diary with no appearant reaction though sometimes I wonder if he would have greater improvement if I took that out too. Since starting the diet he has become much more social, his attention span has greatly increased and he is saying more words than before. Guest guest
That's fantastic news ! You are doing the right thing >Since starting the diet he has become much more > social, his attention span has greatly increased and he is saying > more words than before. IMHO these areas are the most important to all our kids. Keep it up! Benedict
Guest guest
, How old is your son? I'm fairly new to the list and not able to follow it a whole lot. I appreciate your report! Also the goat product point as I'm about to head into that more fully. I wasn't aware of stages either other than the intro diet. I've been made aware and thinking of restarting, but not sure that I have any reason to other than to be literal with the majority here and what they report works. I've started nystatin on my son as of yesterday. He is to get 1 tsp 2 times a day and I'm pretty sure the special mixture of it isn't legal as he takes it and the taste isn't bad, but... in an effort to get this in him I'm going to take that chance for now because... after one dose yesterday we saw some yeast leave as well as some increase in not only actual words, but combined signs to complete a thought and response time increased to more normal. (although response was on an up in time the last few days before nystatin) I know this diet has helped my son as well already and I'm anticipating the day that I can report such wonderful news too.
