Guest guest
Hi Dana, I can't answer many of your questions, but I can give you my slant on 2 of them. The stimming/no stimming thing ... I believe that as their bodies adjust to a new normal, they react in different ways. But yes, you are right to look closely at foods just in case. About the apples ... I don't know " what's up. " I don't think my daughter has any salicylate problems, but even golden delicious apples push her toward constipation. I think they're just plain hard to digest. If you bite into a ripe pear, it almost disintegrates in your mouth, but bites of apple only get as small as you chew them. And if you don't chew them enough ... That's just my opinion about apples. Maybe there's something in their " makeup " , but I really can't say. Glad to hear that your little guy is showing some benefits already! Sue (from Pickering) Mom to , 4.5, formerly? Guest guest
Hi Dana, > regarding illegals - i know in the book it says you cannot eat canned > meats. is this because of ingredients or elaine doesn't trust the foods > in a can (although canned fruits are okay???)? i'd like to know for very > future reference b/c j used to eat this canned chicken by > valleyfreshkitchens.com and i've written them to find out exact > ingredients and their chicken/turkey is only chicken/turkey, salt and > water - so what do you think? Yes, it is because there can be just about anything in there. There are innumerable ways that producers can get around declaring ingredients on the label. Please see http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#homemade The only canned fruits that are okay are those that are canned in their own juice. Such as pineapple that is canned *in the juice from the pineapple*. > (almost) lastly, i was talking to a friend of mine about this diet and i > was mentioning that when we first started, the stimming was out of > control. she asked me what he had been eating and since we were doing > intro - he was having a lot of cooked carrots. she mentioned that when > she was on the south beach diet she couldn't eat carrots or watermelon b/c > of something called a high glycemic index. when i checked this site out: > www.glycemicindex.com it showed that carrots have an index of something > like 92 - this number shows how foods react immediately on a person's > blood sugar. now i thought, great, another food he can't eat but since > we've taken out the carrots, he's been MUCH better after than before the > carrots. Here is a quote about carrots and glycemic index, " GI numbers can be misleading. Carrots, for example, have a published GI of 71, which is high. Does that mean you should avoid carrots? Not really. To get the standard amount of carbohydrate (50 grams) the test subjects had to eat a pound and a half of carrots. Nobody does that except Bugs Bunny. " The whole article can be found at http://www.straightdope.com/columns/011123.html (Thanks, Mimi). Also regarding the glycemic index Elaine has witten before that low glycemic index foods like potatoes are low not because they don't cause the blood sugar rise and insulin spurt but because they are feeding " the body " they are feeding the bacteria way down in the " fermentation tank " . Guest guest
Hi Dana, Say, your suspicion about the epsom salts and looser stools may be right on target and I would suggest you keep an eye out on that relationship. Our son has the constipation issues and someone on this list mentioned to do the epsom salts bath because it can help loosen up the stools. Our son doesn't take baths anymore so we haven't tried her suggestion, but I am thinking about applying the epsom salts cream. Just another thought. By the way, we also have a who is 2 years 4 months and is not talking but is signing (about 35 signs) and is definitely interactive and responsive. It's our 10 yr old who has the autism and the constipation although the two year old has a tendency towards the constipation also.....interesting, and he's (2 yr old) not vaccinated and has never had antibiotics. Hope your continues to do well. Take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA with 10 yr old on SCD 10+weeks On the weird side he's been having > no-stim days and out of control stimming and we fed him the EXACT menu 4 > days in a row and 2 days were really good bm and 2 days were a mess. - > ??? - has anyone seen a pattern of using epsom salt baths and then having > really loose bms? he's not drinking the water at all since i know some > use it as a diuretic but could it be clearing out his system along with > the diet?
