No MSG, but it does have nitrates, etc. I know the Meijer in Greenwood had the no sugar bacon this winter because I bought a package for Christmas. Guest guest
Jody, I have a winner on the bacon so far at Nature's Cupboard on US 31 just north of the Greenwood Mall. I don't remember the brand but he said no sodium, no sugar, phophates, nitrates, none. but it is $6.09 for 12 oz pkg. I am still searching for the ham. Guest guest
Jody, I am back from the bacon and ham search. Here are the results Archer's meat market Greenwood NO Klemm's Meats Indianapolis NO Beechgrove Meat Market said yes that was where I went but they were wrong so NO Meijer does not have a no sugar bacon now. GFS NO Sam's Greenwood NO So rather than have one shipped and pay tons of $$$ which we don't have, and since the Health Food Store wanted $6.09 for 12 oz of bacon I have a thought I will make a big chicken, we will put on rose tinted glasses and call it ham!! Much easier. Have a blessed Easter Sorry I found nothing Blessings, Doreen Re: bacon Doreen, I bet someone up there carries the FIELD bacon. I posted the ingredients yesterday. Guest guest
Hey everybody guess what!!!! I checked Walmart one more time and they got in the Gwaltney's bacon. It is sugar free. It does have the nitrites but for $2.49 a pack I am seeing if that is an issue. Never was that I know of. We tried some tonight and both of us were in our glory!!! Thanks everyone. Guest guest
Thank you , I found some sugar free although not nitrate free bacon at Walmart tonight. We tried it (do not know if nitrates would be a problem), It was just $2.49 / pack. If this doesn't work out I will check on your idea. It is extra thin and crisp and having it often is worry free. It tastes much better than commercial bacon. Carol F. Guest guest
Hi Helen, In BTVC Elaine writes, " For those who cannot get their meat smoked without sugar, ordinary smoked meat may be eaten once a week if it is fried very crisply. " So you could try a little and see if there is any reaction. Maybe start with a small piece and then try a agin a week later if no problems. In the meantime a local butcher may be able to cure bacon for you to your specifications. Some people have this done. If you check the amounts of carbs on the bacon package and compare it to other sugar cured bacon you can find out if there is a lot or if they just use a combination of the three sweeteners to equal as much as other sugar bacon. I personally use Maple Leaf 33 1/3 less salt bacon that does have the nitrates etc but no sugar. I tried the plain sugar bacon and still reacted with a small amount.
