A goiter can be an enlarged thyroid gland or it can be from nodules or other growths inside the thyroid tissue. That's why they do the scans and the needle biopsies to determine what it is. In my case they did the scan and found a perfectly healthy thyroid gland that just happened to be twice normal size. It wasn't all that noticeable but I'd been having a LOT of trouble with coughing for years. A fullness in my throat...
