Guest guest
HJ, He usually eats cereal for breakfast but for lunch and dinner I cook low carb . But then he wants a baked potatoe with his meal. I'm afraid when he goes for his dr's appt . in April that they are going to put him on insulin. I even bought the book " The Schwarbein Principal " that is really geared for the person with diabetes but he hasn't read it. I guess that is all I can do. You know the old saying you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Laverne think spring
Guest guest
That's exactly how I feel about my Mom! I hate it when she buys the junk food then complains because she eats it, and then blames it on everyone else.... --- ecenet@... wrote: > You know the old saying you can lead a horse > to water but you can't make him drink. > Laverne > > think spring > > ===== Kathy __________________________________________________
Guest guest
LoL! Kathy, are we sisters? Our mother's are so alike! Mine is also a diabetic with a long history of getting upset about her blood sugar and dependence on insulin but refusing to change her dietary habits. She has finally started to do a modified version of low carb by staying away from all sweets, starches, pasta, breads, rice and flour. At least it's a start :-) Hope your mom comes around at some point too. -Marlena > >Reply-To: Atkins_Support_List >To: Atkins_Support_List >Subject: Re: Question ? >Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 19:20:17 -0800 (PST) > >My mother is on insulin and Will NOt even consider Atkins! Guest guest
There is another book for managing diabetes with LC - Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. The Dr manages his own diabetes with LC. Not trying to run your life, but maybe he would think a little harder if he had to go past the LC food you serve and buy/prepare his own cereal and potatoes. I am the only LC in my family, but since I do most of the shopping. It is one treat a week - chips, ice cream, cookies (I used to buy ALL of these every week), and dinner is usually meat, 2 veggies, and a small amount (1 small serving each) of something starchy - rice, potatoes, noodles. I am trying not to lead them to where I was. HJ ----- Original Message ----- You know the old saying you can lead a horse > to water but you can't make him drink. Guest guest
ooooooooooooooooo She does make me so very angry. She is an intelligent woman (she had me, iddn't she:) ) But on this subject she will forever drive me crazy. And with the recent posts about salt having SUGAR of all things in it.... She puts so much salt on her food that you can't even steal something off her plate! Who else would salt a dill pickle and then salt the juice and drink it??????? Uh oh... now I'm getting started.... And to top it off... I may have a sister she never told me about? Well... darn! LOL --- Marlena M wrote: > LoL! Kathy, are we sisters? Our mother's are so alike! Guest guest
It's really too bad the diabetes professionals don't get on the low carb bandwagon. I have heard from several health care providers that they believe the Diabetic diet will be something similar to Atkins in the next few years. Hope so. Guest guest
, my husbands doctor did tell him to go on atkins but he just does not want to give up his choice of foods. His dr. is my dr also and that is why I myself went on atkins. My dr. is on atkins himself. Laverne think spring
Guest guest
HJ, my husband is retired so he goes to the grocery store himself and buys the cereal and breac ect. I'm doig my best without turning into a b---- about it. He has to make the decision. He's not a child, he has to be responsible for his own health. Guest guest
Yes,.... actually on my box of Morton Iodized Salt it says... salt, calcium silicate, dextrose and potasium iodide.... Makes you wonder doesn't it? Guest guest
I totally agree with you. My DH wanted me to tell him what to eat and not read the book. I refused, and he has never really given it a try in 2+ years. HJ ----- Original Message ----- He has to make the decision. He's not a child, he has to > be responsible for his own health. Guest guest
I eased my hubby into it and he successfully low-carbed for over a year (losing 53 pounds) before going off last fall. He never actually did read the book and relied upon me heavily in the beginning to explain what he could and could not eat, but soon he was doing his share of low-carb cooking and was fully cognizant of what he could and could not have. Initially he would email me and say: this is what I've had to eat for lunch - how many carbs do I have left for dinner? But after awhile he sort of had a system down. He'd have eggs and sausage and bacon for breakfast with some low-carb ketchup (about 5 carbs) - meat and veggies for lunch (about 10 carbs), meat and veggies for dinner (about 10 carbs) and a treat in the evening (about 5 carbs). Once he got the hang of serving sizes and what veggies were low carb, he did great on his own. Now that he's not low carbing, he still keeps me on my toes and tells me what I should or shouldn't be eating! We have a division of labour with information gathering: I do the low-carb email lists... he does the fish (we have 6 aquariums) lists... it works out well and we share the information as we see fit. Guest guest
My mother is on insulin and Will NOt even consider Atkins! It really upsets me that she won't listen. She bit**** about her sugar being 250 and has some icecream... That sounds EXACTLY like my grandmother. She too was on insulin, was overweight and had a bowl of ice cream every night. She eventually lost her leg due to some kind of complications. in Tucson
