Guest guest
It was thanks to what I've learned on IE and this group that my daughter discovered the perfect topic for her required Public Speaking class for this final semester of college: The Role of the Fashion Industry in Our Perception of Female Beauty. Reading the prepatory research she did, watching the video of her speech, I learned a bundle. I only wish I had a good enough system to transfer the video to the web, because it's definitely something that I think every woman should hear. We have been so manipulated for centuries--even before the wonders of PhotoShop! (Not only that, but she got her class so involved in the speech that she got 158 pts out of 100--58 bonus points--for an A-double-plus on her first speech--and a classroom of 98% young women had a real paradigm shift awakening!) Guest guest
See if you can get someone to help your daughter download her video to YouTube then we, and many others, can watch it! How neat that she took such a meaningful and important topic and FLEW with it YEA! for her! Guest guest
What is amazing is that I, too, did a project for a speech class on how the media portrays women. It wasn't easy, standing in a room full of mostly much younger students (I was in my mid 20s) who were mostly slim, when I was 200+ pounds over weight. But I did it, and it resonated... And yet, I failed to take home the messages I was sending out! I still felt horrible about myself. I still dreamed of having the body of a " plus " sized model... but I'll never have those bodies, because they are airbrushed and manipulated to such a degree that they aren't - and can't be - real anyway. Besides, I am not built that way. I haven't got those natural curves all the plus-sized models do. I've got big boobs, a flat ass and no waist. That's not belittling myself, just accepting it. No matter how thin I got, I'd never have an " hourglass " shaped figure... and so what was I doing all this time before IE? I was chasing a unicorn... the unicorn being my " ideal " body. It can't exist, and now I know that and I'm coming to accept what I do have and be okay with it. It's not easy... but I am getting there, and videos like these certainly help! Also, if you go to YouTube, search on Size Ate. Her show is amazing and I'd love to see it someday. > > > It was thanks to what I've learned on IE and this group that my daughter > discovered the perfect topic for her required Public Speaking class for this > final semester of college: The Role of the Fashion Industry in Our Perception > of Female Beauty. Guest guest
Alison - the point was that with photo manipulation software, you can do anything to anyone. You can make a person look completely different. So when we see models and actresses photographed for magazines and the like, it's worth remembering that the person probably looks completely different before the makeup artists and photo editors get them. > > >Next time you feel badly about yourself in comparison to what you see > >women look like in magazines or on TV, watch one of these videos. Guest guest
Mae, Thanks so much for sharing these. I haven’t seen the first one before. I absolutely love the films that Dove is doing (they have several now). It really just goes to show you that no one can achieve the media’s standards for beauty. Why even try, it’s not possible. Be happy right here, right now and get on with your life! I love it. Thanks! Guest guest
okay, I'll accept your explanation. It just doesn't make sense to me, but neither does airbrushing photos in amagazine. I heard Whoopie Goldberg on the View talk about being airbrushed for a magazine cover and it made her really angry because it no longer looked like her. I just think it's silly. Maybe I'm just not enough in the midst of popular culture to get it. As I said I only saw the first one and I thought she looked much better at the beginning. In fact, I thought she looked amazing. She looked so unnatural at the end that I thought it was ugly so I didn't get the purpose. Be that as it is, I'll accept your explanation. Thanks, Mae. Guest guest
Gillian - I have mixed feelings about the Dove ads. On the one hand, they are a definite step in the right direction. On the other hand, they are still selling products that indicate we have something " wrong " with us that needs " fixing " - like " firming cream " which they now sell using women who look like they'd need firming, at least by societal standards (they all looked pretty good to me, but I realize it's a perspective thing). So I think Dove has the right idea, in part... but not sure they are " there " yet, either. > > Mae, > > > > Thanks so much for sharing these. I haven't seen the first one before. Guest guest
Alison, if you are fortunate enough to be untouched by the media, that's really wonderful... it's just that a lot of women, and especially younger women and teens, are so influenced by it, that it's hard for them to accept themselves as is. The point I was making is that we compare ourselves (not you, obviously) to these images and they are not only unrealistic, but often completely false! So better to accept and love ourselves as we are, because that's the only thing that matters - our own reality. > >> > >> > >> > >>>Next time you feel badly about yourself in comparison to what you see > >>>women look like in magazines or on TV, watch one of these videos. Guest guest
Hi Mae, Thanks for sharing this. I haven’t seen the commercials for the firming cream. I will have to look into this more. I was considering doing some kind of donation program to the Self-Esteem Fund but I will have to investigate this more. They are most certainly doing more than a lot of companies, but maybe there are other more deserving organizations I can contribute to. Thanks!
