Question about spacing of colonoscopies for screening

Hello all:

I hope this post finds you all in good spirits today. Nice to have a

chance to sit and read and post - the first chance to really do it in

a while.

For those of you who don't know my story, my mom has Stage 4 colon

cancer, has 'seeding' throughout her abdomen. My grandfather had

colon cancer and passed away from it. I have aunts who've had polyps

(same side of the family) and a cousin who had a colostomy at age 10

for ulcerative colitis.

Here is my question. The gastroenterologist is suggesting 5 years

before my next colonoscopy. Do you think this is a reasonable wait

time between? Does anyone know what the guidelines are, how they are

developed, where I can find them?

I know a has mentioned she goes every two years. What about

others? Just wondering how people come up with the decsion of how

often to go?
