Hi Fran,

Some people sugar alcohol does not bother them, other people it does. The

best way to find out is to eat then test to see what happens.

Fran..

I think it must have something to do with the fact that there is not FDA

requirements. Probably, it's not effective or net carbs, but it is really

hard to decipher. They can also play a game with sugar alcohols etc. I have

bought their products b/f and though the same thing.

If little else, the brain is an educational toy.

> I went to walmart today. I found some sugar free candy and got two bags.

It was 2 for $2. Its manufactured for Carbolite Foods Inc. Chocolate Toffee

Chews. On the front of the bag there is a big star thing and in it written

is 0 sugar, 0 carbs. I got 2 bags and brought them home. I should have read

the back label. The front says 0 carbs so I didnt. The nutrition facts on

the back says 33 carbs per 4 pieces. How can it say 0 carbs on the front of

the bag and 33 carbs on the back? I ate one. It tasted good. Just makes me

mad it has carbs when the front in big letters says no carbs. By the way its

sweetend with Splenda. fran

I find that if I go into a mode where I want to eat every sweet in sight,

I get candy like a bite size candy bar and just suck on it and let it

desolve in my mouth. It seems to last longer that way and helps with my

sweet tooth. If I just chew it up and eat it I find I want another and

another because it dont satisfy me. fran

> I admire anyone who can eat 1-2 pieces of candy and leave the rest

alone. I can't, so I don't purchase it. This goes for all kinds of " sugar

free " or " carb-lite " type of food that activates my sweet tooth monster.

Thank you Eunice. I will test it and see if it makes mine go up. I didnt

know it could effect you. There is just so much to grasp learning all this.

I have a learning disability so I have to read things over and over to grasp

it so Im learning all this stuff slower than most people. If I ever ask you

guys the same question a few times its because I couldnt remember asking

before or reading the answers. Im the queen of post it notes..lol I also

notice if my sugars to high or low that I cant understand and grasp things

well. I will ask what what over and over..:) It dont even have to be super

high to get that way...I can just get close to 200 and get that way. Today I

went shopping. I went shopping and noticed I didnt feel right. I was getting

real bitchy and impatient and I was sweating bad. It felt funny when I

walked like I was walking on cotton. I felt fuzzy headed. I tested and I was

almost 200. I didnt take my meds before I left because it makes me go to the

bathroom so much. I took them when I got back and it lowered to 115 and I

feel much better now. Sorry Im yapping so much...Im in a chatty mood

today..lol fran

Hi Fran, The FDA allows companies to use sugar

alcohols as sweetners and " discount " those carbs as

" 0 " Net Carbs since they are not absorbed as quickly

as sugar.

However, on the product label the total actual carbs

must be listed. You can search for more info about

" sugar Alcohols " at PUBMED, the National Library of

Medicine.

Thx, Earl

I was looking at something at the grocery store the other day and I thought it

said 0 sugar 0 carbs on the front but when I looked at it closer it said

0 sugar carbs. There was a big 0 with the " sugar " and " carbs " next to it so it

really read " 0 sugar carbs " .

If it is all sugar alchohols then the NET carbs are 0. Very misleading I

agree.

This says at the bottom back under the nutrition facts in a seperate area

that total carbs 33.0, fiber 0.5, sugar alcohol 30.0, net effective carbs

2.5. This is all so confusing how they figure this all up. fran

Yes thats how this is. Looks like 0 sugar, 0 carbs, but its not. I will

have to pay closer attention. This label reading and understanding what Im

reading is all new to me. The only label reading I have done before was when

I was on a low calorie diet. fran

Fran, actually sugar alcohols has a slight increase on blood sugars. They dont

metabolize fully as other starches do and most of it passes through the

intestines unnoticed. Some though get noticed and can cause a small increase in

b.s. Though not too signiciantly and your numbers may vary. As for the net

carbs, depending on how you usually react with this chemical, you can either

subtract half of the sugar alchols from the carbs, or not use them at all in the

carb count. OF course, they can have a laxative effect on senstive individuals.

And I am one of them. All I have to do is just look at these products and I am

racing for the bathroom. Gangway! And plus they are almost always tasteless. I

dont know why they are being used. I guess they are cheaper then other

alternative sweetners.

Being pregnant and on iron pills, I have avoided all constipation by

drinking artificually sweetened juice everyday...it seems to strike a nice

balance! LOL

I like sugar free candy but I live in the bathroom if I eat much of it.

The sugar-free M & M things, in a one serving size, I will eat sometimes...and

I can get away with that much.

Net Carbs is the total carbs minus the Fiber content and Sugar Alcohol

content! The ADA's official view of sugar alcohols is to count HALF of them in

your

total daily carb count as they are absorbed slower.

So for example, i bought a candy bar at Wal-Mart yesturdayIt's by Carb

Watchers and says " Less than 1 gram Net Impact Carbs " and it's the Raspberry &

Creme

flavor (very yummy actualy)! It says the Total Carb per serving is 4 grams,

with less than one of those being sugar....the other 3 grams are sugar alcohols

(malitol in this case)! So while they can subtract the whole sugar alcohol

count the ADA recommends that Diabetics only subtract half. So for us the carb

count is 2.5 grams per serving (1 gram sugar, 1.5 grams sugar alcohol)!

But another trap in a LOT of these low carb or sugar free candies is the

number of servings. For instance this Raspberry & Creme candy bar in front of

me

is only a 1 ounce bar, is 4 inches long and divided into 5 sections but the

label says there are THREE servings per bar! So if you don't look carefully at

labels and notice these and eat the whole bar you are not having 1 net carb

but using the ADA guideline you end up eating 7.5 carbs! And if you are like me

and count all the sugar alcohol carbs and eat the whole bar you actualy have

12 carbs!

I know it sounds confusing but once you learn what net carbs means and

understand the labels it does get a lot simplier to manage! I usualy take it

very

easy and in the case of this candy bar i only had ONE of the 5 squares for my

serving. Some other low carb candies i've seen at Wal-Mart like these new

Chocolate or Peanut Butter covered Pretzels are pretty good too, i just stick

with

one or two pieces max as a treat!

Look more carefully; what the graphic on the front of the bag actually

says is " 0 sugar carbs " --that is, none of the carbs are from sugar.

Look carefully at the lable on the back; you will see that indeed, there

is no sugar. I'm quite familiar with Carbolite; I love their M & Ms

analog.

Interesting; my doctors (an M.D. and a D.C.) both told me the reverse.

(Remember, Chiropractors have to take Nutrition; Medical Doctors do

not.)

Re: complaint/sugar free candy

My Dr. told me to count all carbs listed and not do " net " carbs. I

don't think there is enough evidence of absorbing only a certain amount

to accuratly claim " net " carbs. My Dr. feels the same way.

This reminds of the " scientific research " tests we hear about done on

animals where incredibly excessive amounts of substances are used on the

animals. It is then determined said substance causes cancer and all manner

of diseases. LOL.

I agree!! Portion control is really a difficult thing for me, so I

avoid alot of foods for this very reason. I eat alot of Healthy

Choice dinners and stick to snack size packages whenever possible,

to avoid temptation. I know it's cheaper to cook and freeze

leftovers, or buy in bulk and repack, but I don't trust myself, so

it may cost more, but if it's not in the cupboard.
