I think a lot depends on what weight you start out at. At my last

appt 4 weeks ago which would have made me 17 weeks I had already

gained 15 lbs. My dr hasn't said one word about it. One of the dr

said some women gain more weight at the beginning. Good luck at your

appt.

Dana,

I'm not a very good example, but I gained 15 with Blake in the first

trimester and with Mikaela it was 8 lbs., probably more like 10 by my 14

week appt. Hope that helps, I'm sure you are doing fine. Take care,

Dana,

I've read in those " If you have a perfect pregnancy " books that you

shouldn't gain any more then 5lbs in the first trimester (given that you

were of average weight to begin with). But who has a perfect pregnancy?! :)

For me I eat all the time (seems like it anyway) to keep from feeling sick,

and if that means a few extra pounds then so be it...it's well worth it!! I

feel like I've already gained weight and I'm only 10wks!!! But on my little

cheap-o bathroom scale it doesn't appear that I've gained but a pound or

2....doesn't seem possible given that my pants are already almost to tight

to wear..eeek!!

I kept the weight notes. At 3 months (14 weeks) I had gained between

2-6 lbs (my pre-pg weight fluctuated by 4 lbs). I started out normal

weight more or less (well, maybe more :). Four weeks later, I

realized I was gaining a pound/month. I thought that was not supposed

to happed til later! I still have 22 weeks to go!

AmyR,

Well I started out at 5'7 and 137 pounds (at 6 weeks). Usually I weigh 125-130 but the whole TTC stress took a toll on my figure. Anyway, I am worried getting on those darn scales. I guess I never mentioned I had bulimia for 13 years. But that was a long time ago - and I have never really paid alot of attention to weight for that reason. Now there is al this focus on weight gain and getting bigger and it scares me. Not that I am feeling like the bulimia monster is coming back just that I don't want to be so miserable worrying about weight that I can't enjoy my pregnancy. Ok, so maybe I am a weirdo but I just needed some reassurance.

Ok, I am going to keep notes on this weight thing too. My doctor was not happy that I had gained 4 pounds at 10 weeks so I know he'll flip a lid if I have gained more. I'll let you know more after my appt tomorrow.

Dana,

Try not to stress about the weight. I don't know if I told you, but

my dr and I have a deal, I don't ask about it and he just tells me if

I am on target. I have to admit though, I am getting curious. I

definitely want to find out my total weight gain in the end so I know

what I have to loose!

Good luck at the apt,

Dana,

Please try not to worry about "growing" during your pregnancy... you were at a nice weight when you got pregnant. So, normal weight gain would be around 25-35 pounds and you'd be surprised how much that gives you to work with!

Does that make any sense at all?? Don't stress about it Sweetie! If you gained 35 pounds, you loose 15-20 in the week or so after delivery (usually) and that leaves you with a manageable amount to loose after the baby is here! Besides, after seeing the little miracle you've "grown", weight will not be the first thing on your mind! I hope!

I'm a bit of a scale watcher myself... I think about everything I eat, before I eat it - USUALLY. I have to rationalize in my mind if it's worth it or not!

Anyway, after these babies are born, we can form a weight loss support group!!! LOL!

Dana,

Have you

read that girlfriend’s guide to pg? I know the book was a little tongue in

cheek, but the lady who wrote the book talked about this theory she had that

everyone gained a predetermined amount of weight with their pregnancies—like it

was in their genes or something. I think it must be like how most people stay

within 5 pounds of their weight if they’re not trying to diet or anything. I

don’t know if her theory was true, but it was comforting. She talked about how

some women would get real thin the first trimester because they were so sick,

whereas the women who weren’t sick would gain a lot. In the end, they all ended

up gaining about the same.

It made me

feel better anyway. Janice

Dana,

I know just how you feel about the weight gain. After the ep I lost 35 lb., I had been carrying around far too long from some medication they had me on to help me continue to breastfeed with Casey. I was so depressed that I was hardly eating (which isn't good), but nevertheless it came off. I held that weight until about four or five months into the pg. With the pg I gained 17 lb., I was very proud of myself. After the surgery I was back to my weight of 135 within a week. But then I was having the same problem, I wasn't producing enough breastmilk. I had to increase my food and fluid intake. Needless to say, my weight has slowly been creeping back up. I've blossomed back up to 155 lb - argh. I'm now only breastfeeding a couple of times a day and to be honest I can't wait to stop completely so I can go back to a normal diet and hopefully get my weight back down. But to be completely honest, I'm not going to worry about it until after she is finished breastfeeding.

Love & hugs,

Jo-Ann

P.S. When is your u/s?

Dana... With you having a history of bulimia you should probably discuss it with your dr. S/He might be a little less harsh on any weight gain (unless it will specifically harm the baby) knowing that you have a history of this... I really don't think your dr wants to run the risk of you falling back into that. Just an idea. Even if you are confident that you won't do it... it could at least keep her/him off your back. Well it sounds like our "normal" weights are the same and if you can hang in there so can I . I mean the extra pounds are there for a good reason in both our cases.

You know I have a doctor's appointment today, and I am going to do just that. I mean maybe he can find a way to at least be a little "gentler" when he talks about weight with me. Thanks for the suggestion, I honestly don't think I would have thought to tell him.

Dana,

It’s a

great book! I checked it out of the library at 5 weeks. I was just a little

excited. It reads really well. The

author addresses a lot of things that the other books don’t deal with, like

maternity underwear, weight gain and gas.

It makes you feel like you are not alone. I’m down here in NC and no one

ever talks about anything unpleasant. But you still need answers don’t you??? I’m in the land of denial.

Janice,

What a great idea...I will go to my local library today to see if they have a copy. If I like it (which I am sure I will) I will have to buy it and add it to the 15 books I already have in my pg collection. It's crazy I have almost a whole bookcase (small) dedicated to TTC and pg. After this baby I think I am going to donate them to the Fertility Clinic. I got most of them at the Used Book Store so I wouldn't be out a lot of money and after this one, the only books I'll be buying are weight watcher cook books and child care manuals. I'll let you know what I think...

Oh and here in TN, we try to avoid talking about unpleasantries as well.

Hi Janice,

There may be something to that theory. After retrieval I was 16lbs. heavier from water weight (IVF stims, and ep surgery 6 weeks prior); by the 13th weeks I was 24 lbs. heavier; yesterday, 17w 3 days, I'm still 24 lbs. heavier but my tummy is much bigger. As my progesterone is being reduced I've been losing the water weight and replacing it with baby weight.

Hi Janice,

Unfortunately it's not very exciting or luxurious here. I live in Ocean City, NJ. It's really very family oriented and is wonderful for small children, the older ones tend to become a bit bored with the beach and boardwalk.

It almost sound like you might be a little hypo. What were your numbers

when you went off Tap? I think a new blood test is a good idea, make sure

to get both T3 and T4 numbers as well as TSH, which lags behind. Do you

have other hypo symptoms like being cold, dry skin, etc? I was a bit hypo

when I stopped PTU (I had been taking too much), but it didn't take long to

get back to normal. I still do blood tests every 3 months now, especially

since my condition also involves my levels of estrogen and progesterone.

If the blood tests come back normal, scrutinize which side of normal it is

on, since you must determine your own normal within that range. I feel

better when I am on the higher side of the normal range. Also, in the land

of euthyroid, we have to remember that we can also be experiecing things

that do not necessary have to do with our thyroid levels.

Good luck.

  • 2 months later...

7 years ago, before any hint of GD, I weighed 115 pounds..Then a year

or so later later I got down to 98 pounds. I believe that to be the

beginning of the GD problems. Then over time, as I got more and more

hyper I actually gained weight, my doc says 30% of GD patients

actually gain because they eat so much. Well that was me, I went from

98 pounds to the place I was at when diagnosed, that is; 140

pounds. I'm only 5'3 " so 140 was alot for me.

Once I began ATD's I gained about 5 more pounds. Over the course of my

disease I went from a size 3 to a size 13!!!!!

I have been on ATD's for about a year, I have been euthyroid for 6

months and now weigh 118 pounds (phew!) My 2 cents is that wether you

take the darn ATD's or not, a thyroid condition puts your health and

your weight in danger. Just because someone doesn't take their PTU

that doesn't mean they wont gain weight, BUT I do think that there is

a time (say 6 months) after beginning the meds where the body will

fight hard to achieve some balance. Initially in this time one will

gain weight, then once a euthyroid state is achieved, a body can begin

to return to its normal weight.

I'm sorry to say this too, but it seems that the noncompliance issue

seems to be a problem for " younger " girls. Well I was 26 when I went

from a size 3 to a 13. If you think vanity wasn't an issue, boy it

was.. But anyone who puts their appearance before total health has

other problems besides Graves.

Hi Holly,

I can't give you a medical reason other than to say our thyroids play a huge

part in our metabolisms and when they are shot so is the metabolism. I have

gained a LOT of weight since having RAI and left to go hypO for 4 years.

Started losing a bit when I switched to Armour thryoid, but do expect I will

gain some while on PTU for my eyes. I hate it, it made me cry for a long

time. Now I am in a place in my life where I have accepted myself, if I

never lose the bulk of the weight I am still the person inside that I want

to be. Yes it is tough, but dying needlessly is a worse choice.

I agree that dying needlessly is a worse choice, and I wouldn't t dream of

stopping my ATDs. I'm trying to get well! But at the same time, I can

understand how upset a twenty-something would be to not only be sick, but

start getting fat, too. I'm 37 and in a long-term relationship, and

although I'm doing everything humanly possible to stay fit through this

whole ordeal, it's not nearly as big an issue for me as it is for someone

young who hasn't yet been married. It's tough out there with everyone

looking like super models nowadays. We can tell them over and over how it's

what's inside that counts and how they need to love themselves the way they

are. It's not going to mean a thing to someone out there trying to date.

It's bad enough what's happening to our skin and hair!

This horrible disease has come along and just ripped away any control I felt

like I had in my life. But, if I know why things are happening and what to

expect, it starts to give a little bit of that control back to me. Are

people failing to exercise and eat right while they're sick? Is that part of

the reason for what I'm seeing in some cases as huge weight gain? I'm afraid

that's not it. I run, lift weights, do yoga, and just added pilates to my

regimen. I watch what I eat religiously. I've now gained 10 lbs since the

end of August despite that. Talk about lack of control. But if I know why

this is happening, then maybe I can do something more, or just accept that

it's going to happen. The fear of the unknown is the last thing we need

right now. I can't accept that there is not a medical reason for this. If

you're euthyroid, doesn't that mean that your levels are where they should

be and therefore your metabolism is where it should be?

I gained 30 lbs when I was taking Paxil, and the main reason I decided to go

off the Paxil was for that reason. It was a nightmare trying to get the

weight off. I felt terrible with all that weight on me and hurt all the

time. After I started losing weight, my fibromyalgia symptoms almost

completely went away. I had no problem with depression or anxiety. I still

hadn't gotten all the weight off when the GD kicked in. I had 10 lbs to go.

So this issue if very fresh and very real to me. And I know that one of the

keys to getting well with GD is reducing the stress and bad feelings in your

life. That's tough to do when you see yourself outwardly falling apart no

matter what you do. Since I've gained the 10 lbs, for the last two weeks, my

fibromyalgia has flared back up worse than it ever was. I'm having horrible

anxiety. Couple that with watching that beautifully sculpted body I worked

so hard for slip away for no reason... (I'm exaggerating somewhat -- it was

beautiful to my previously overweight self ) ; )

It is tough. But I know someone out there has to know why it happens. I

need to know for my own sense of well being, whether I can do anything about

it or not. It's all about control!

Holly :)

Holly,

There is a medical reason.

Even when we have a euthyroid state, we still have Graves, I think

with that in mind, our metabolism may not be as " normal " as we

think. Unless you have had your antibodies tested and have acheived

full remission, I think there are always shifts in metabolism, heart

rate, moods etc. Even in a euthyroid state you can still be on too

much ATD for you individually, This was the case with me a while back,

My Nurse Practitioner shaved another 25mg's off of my PTU doasge, and

while I " felt " almost the same, my weight started to come off.

I think it's not a science, and it varies so much between individuals,

that a person really has to keep a close eye on their own bloodwork

and see where it feels right for you. I think the thing that has made

me feel most in control and get better more quickly is taking a very

proactive role in my treatment along with the professionals whose care

I am under. I watch my labs, I prepare questions about all kinds of

things to take with me to the Doctor when I go for checkups. I discuss

everything with them, and find out where it could relate to my GD.

It's so very important to decide to " take control " and with that

conscious decision can come some liberation. Make no mistake, it can

still be frustrating, but it's not spinning out of my reach to change

the way my body is behaving.

> It is tough. But I know someone out there has to know why it happens. I

> need to know for my own sense of well being, whether I can do anything about

> it or not. It's all about control!

Do you watch your labs, do you shift your meds under the guidance of

your doctor, shave some off, add some, try some experimenting with

tweaking the levels some. I have had good luck with this.. Do you take

any and every question to your doc or research on the internet and

find out reasons why certain things can go a certain way. These are my

suggestions. I really was that " 20 something " you mentioned whose

entire life was devestated by going up 10 sizes, but I'll tell you,

I am a lot happier and stronger now than I was before I had to take

control of this disease.

Hang in there

Val
