No crazy questions, thanks for asking. I experience it from time to

time, but also for the last 8 months or so I've had Vertigo problems

related to inner ear problems. Related to the neck damage I have, I

don't know, but when it happens I'm chair or bed ridden until it

passes. I take Dramamine for it which appears to help. When I first

asked my Dr about it he thought it would be short term and said there

is really nothing that can be done about it, but like I said it's

been about 8 months. Dave

Hi Dianne,

About 10 months ago I had pulsatile tinnitis in my right ear, where you can

hear the whooshing of the pulse really loud. I had a lot of tests done (like an

MRA of the head to check for an aneurism or a clot) but a cause couldn't be

found. I finally discovered it was from using ice at night on the sides of my

neck, which are painful from arthritis. I would go to sleep with a couple of ice

cubes in baggies and the sides of my neck would get really cold for several

hours (no pain!!!). One night my whole neck spasmed really bad from the cold, so

I stopped using the ice. A couple of months later the tinnitis went away.

Apparently there are little muscles close to the ear, that when spasmed, can

affect hearing.

I don't think the other kind of tinnitis is caused be anything in the neck.

I believe it is mostly caused by damage to the inner ear from loud noise over

many years. Also some medicines can cause it like too much aspirin. And

sometimes ear infections in people already prone to tinnitis can make it worse.

This may be a crazy question but I want to throw it out there. Does anyone

experience ringing in the ears and think that it might be associated with a

problem with the disks in the neck?? Obviously I ask because I have the ringing

and DDD so I'm wondering if the two have anything in common.

Yes, and you are the FIRST person that has mentioned this though I've come

to suspect it. I went through all the tests for Meniere's and I don't have

it. But I do get a bit tipsy and it scared me until I've come to understand

that there is a correlation between my ears, balance and the ringing. I can

also distinguish when a headache is coming due to my neck because I get to

where the text on the computer screen starts to transpose or get blurry. A

coworker said she gets the same thing. I've relaxed a bit just knowing that it

isn't going to kill me LOL even though some days I really feel bad and wonder

if I'm just going to have to lay my head down. I also notice that it is hard

to focus when the headache and ringing get bad.

I've really appreciated the comments these last few days. It's really been

helpful.

Rex,

OMG! And I thought the ringing in my ears was from my migraines. Of

course, with me, neck pain and migraines usually go hand in hand.

When my neck is huring really bad I get a migraine and my ears ring.

I never thought it might be a pinched nerve. And you've had it

constatly for 10 years. Wow. Bless you for being able to deal with

it.

Blessings,

Randy

Ever heard of menieres? The ear thing? i was researching that a bit.

and a bad neck can cause that menieres too. Plus Ever get dizzy from

your neck? Somehow a neck can create dizziness. Like that is a big

symptom of whiplash. Well somehow the upper neck is close to the

ears, and those neck muscles, scm they effect balance. All nerves,

muscles, bones all smooshed in close quarters.Ears even have little

muscles like rochelle mentioned. very weird. cindy

Big Yes, Yes on the ear thing! Definately can come from the neck.

Yesterday while I was sitting in the doctors office I was looking at

that map thing up on the wall of the body and the C3 goes right up to

the occipital level in the back of the head and wraps around the

ears; C4 was just underneath them. (map thingy called something

beginning with a 'D'...I forgot).

My ears pop, flutter like mad butterflies that I can hear (but no one

else ever does), sharp pains and ringing sounds. Also as the neck

pain increases these things do as well, if not addressed they get

worse and a migraine will come. Dealing with migraines I've learned

that this is one of my first signs that one is on its way. Just my

experience. One thing that does help me when I feel this cycle

beginning, besides for resting or icing my neck is to wrap a lidoderm

patch around my neck and be sure to put my neck brace on too.

Hello Dianne,

The lidoderm patch is a prescription, I think we've all tried those,

they're lidocane. The neck braces I have are a couple different type,

the most used and the oldest I have is the soft foam collar - the

wide (tall) and thick one...it's the best for holding those patches

in place and keeping them from lifting all around and waking up with

them tangled in your hair. The second one I use is called a Miami J

collar (which I was told is the 'Cadilac of neck braces'. It is great

for stabilization, I think 70% whereas the soft foam is more like

30%. I have trouble sleeping in the Miami J because regardless what I

try it still seems to make my head fall asleep in the back but I do

use it a lot when I'm awake and it's the best! I also have an Aspen

collar and didn't like that one at all, very thin padding to it and

lots of pressure points from the plastic it's made out of. I did have

to have my doc write a script so I could get a referral to have

medicare pay for them but I have seen them online before and the

pricing wasn't too bad if I recall correctly. The braces are best if

you get them through your doctor's office and they'll send you

somehwere to have them fitted. Hope this helps and answers your

question.

Have a nice night!...oops, morning!
