I would say maybe a good thing at least on the Glipizide. Other then

mentioning that Glipizide is one of the medications that can cause low blood

sugar i

really can't offer any other advice. What you ate/drank to try to raise your

sugar would have certainly worked for me (probably to well and caused me to be

high the rest of the day)! All i can suggest is speaking with your doctor

about it. I know last August i was on both Metformin and Glucotrol XL and had

to be taken off the Glucotrol because i was having low blood sugar almost

everyday while at work! Glucotrol is the same kind of drug as Glipizide in that

low sugar can be a side effect. Once i was off the Glucotrol i had much fewer

low sugar episodes and when i did it was usualy because i hadn't eaten enough

carbs to get me through the work day!

I've always heard that orange juice helps bring it up...quickly.

Glucotabs, but they're only good for about 10 bg pts per tab (from my

testing on myself). They " hit " very quickly but they also " wear out " very

quickly so if your bg level is dropping at the same time (or if you're

producing more insulin or burning calories via activity or whatever), it

can be like a salmon trying to fight its way upstream.

Orange juice is the age-old " fix " because it metabolizes so quickly.

Straight table sugar also works. (Yup, just from a spoon or packet into

mouth, if necessary.) At times, I've used table sugar stirred into OJ. A

candy bar doesn't " hit " quite as quickly as the aforementioned stuff but

the fat and carbs in it help make the sugar hit last a bit longer so you

don't keep bottoming out.

Unless it's a very slow and low (i.e., not drastic/precipitous) drop (of bg

level) that levels out fairly quickly, just carbs won't do it as they're

way too slow (comparatively speaking).

Since all of your stated bg numbers were borderline hypo (hypo is 65 and

lower but bodies react differently), any of the above should work but if

your body still produces insulin and/or you are taking oral meds to

increase insulin production, you have to take those into account as well.

Hypos can be, at best, uncomfortable and, at worst, fatal but always

dangerous if not dealt with immediately. But for many of us, they're just

another " fact of life " to learn to live with.

My doctor told me to just carry about 3 sugar packets with me. (I

don't, but I've never had low problems, yet). He said to put about

three packs in a glass of water and drink it up. Better a straight shot

of sugar for a temporary high than a permenant low (as in 6 feet

under). You can also get sugar packs in most convienence stores, coffee

shops and big stores. Grab a bottle of water or soda and pout the sugar

right into the bottle. My mom's drink of choice was a 16/20oz bottle of

orange juice.
