Can't you buy meters and test sticks over-the-counter in regular stores

and pharmacies where you are? They're certainly not dangerous

machinery.

He could try eating " less " (and more often if necessary) for just the

few days left. Eating to the point where you are " punch drunk " and

sleepy actually makes you feel hungrier. The reason is that " insulin

resistance " is increasing -- there is so much glucose in the

bloodstream that the cells are rejecting it, it is NOT getting burned

off, and it is actually UNavailable to your cells. Thus the high

glucose levels go along with feelings of hunger from the individual

cells.

Thank God for the internet. I would not have discovered how to control

my diabetes without all the wonderful information out there. Well,

that's " just me, " because I am too sensitive to the medications. Check

out the " glycemic index " for ideas on how foods affect people.

Unfortunately, a person in you husband's condition (alternately too

sugary/too low) isn't in a good position to do lots of intellectual web

surfing, or even understand the doctor. Brain cell function is

affected by this seesawing.

DH is already on a disability pension (we are in

Canada) and disability will pay for meters, strips etc

but only after DH has seen the doctor and has received

a prescription for said equipment. Which is why we

have to wait until friday. And since we dont get paid

until wednesday, right now we have no money to buy

anything. Right now DH has to eat what is in our

cupboards, and its not all necessarily good for him.

The last big shop we did a month ago - we had no idea

that he was in such trouble. And disability wil only

certain brands of meters too. Have no idea which kinds

yet.

Meters and so on will have to wait a few days. I know

I am frustrated about not being able to do anything -

but the way Ontario provincial health works is that he

must see his doctor to get the official prescription.

The person who ran DH's blood tests and dxd him is a

doctor - but he specialises in nutrition. He is not

allowed to write prescriptions.

I shall just have to wait and be patient until friday.

EXCESSIVE QUOTING FROM MESSAGE BEING REPLIED TO MANUALLY REMOVED BY MODERATOR.

Thank you Patty for this explanation. As I explained

in a previous post, I cant really do anything until DH

has seen the doctor. And no we cannot buy meters. For

2 reasons - one we are broke until the end of the

month, we get paid on wednesday, and 2 DH's disability

pension will pay for meters and they require a doctors

prescription.

Hi Robynne

I'm also from Ontario and when I went to the drugstore (Shopper's Drug Mart)

to get my supplies (just diagnosed a month ago) they gave me the meter free.

You will need a prescription from your doctor of course but you should be

able to get any brand of meter that you want. The pharmacist will be a big

help to you with picking out the right brand for your particular lifestyle.

Then you will only have to buy the lancets and strips. The strips are

expensive but hopefully disability will pay for most of those. So hang in

there til Friday and try to stay light on the sugars and starches. Let me

know how you make out.

I also pretty much gave up fruit juice after diagnosis. OJ for " medicinal

purposes " (hypos) only because it is so quickly metabolized. If I really

want fruit juice, I drink tomato juice or V-8 which have 1/2 the sugar of

OJ. I do like the many flavors of Crystal Light, I just don't consider that

" fruit juice. " And of all the real fruit juices, apple, apricot and

pineapple are the worst re: sugar.

If you really want to try something " right now, " have DH eat as low-carb

(or close to no-carb) as possible. Proteins and fats last longer in the

system but don't cause the " spikes " that carbs and simple sugars do. Most

veggies have little to no effect on BG. (Potatoes and similar are

definitely carbs.) It is those uncontrolled " spikes " (as well as overall

too-high glucose levels) that cause the sleepiness, " punch drunk & woozy. "

Hi virginia,

And dont forget diabetes classes. DH is gonna have to

learn how to prick himself, frequently!! I hope I

dont have to learn anything like how to give him an

injection. I'll be too nervous to aim the syringe

properly, for fear I'll do something wrong.

Hi Robynne

I checked into diabetes classes in my area and there won't be any til Fall.

I can't believe this. I live in Southwestern Ontario only a couple of hours

from Toronto and other big cities but I guess we're considered out in the

sticks. I'm going to see if I can at least get an appointment with a

dietician. If it weren't for the folks on this list, I'd be still

floundering wondering where to start. I'm getting used to pricking myself -

doing it 4 - 6 times a day and I don't even hesitate any more.

Hi Robynne--

I had the same problem when I got married (almost 18 years ago). My husband

was nervous about giving me injections or testing sugars. It finally dawned

on him that if he couldn't do it and for some reason I couldn't do it then

it could mean my life! He has since because of umpteen billion low blood

sugars during both pregnancies become a total expert. He does them so well

most of the time I don't even feel it. He's better at it than I am! He has

also done many blood tests while I lay peacefully dreaming and I didn't even

know it! It isn't as scary as you think. My mom did the same thing when I

first diagnosed at age 11 in 1974. She swore she couldn't do it so my

father and my younger sister learned how.
