Re: Recurrence, choices

Hi Katy,

Very sorry to hear about your recurrence.

I would tend to prefer surgery if it is possible. From all I have

read, surgery is still considered the " gold standard " therapy for

liver mets. There is about a 1/3 chance of CURE for patients with

limited disease (maybe such as your case). RFA has not yet been

proven " as good as " surgery when it comes to potential cure rate.

If they have to do " open surgery " RFA (as opposed to the " easier "

percutaneous RFA where no incisions are made), then there may be

little difference in recovery times between the RFA and the liver

resection anyway. In that case, there is no reason to prefer the RFA

over surgery.

Have you discussed the pros and cons of surgery vs RFA with a

surgeon? Perhaps you might want to get the opinions of several

different surgeons - at least one of which at a major cancer center

(or at least someone at a State University).

Best Wishes,

Katy, I can't comment in the form of advice as I am caregiver to a

stage III husband who is still undergoing chemo, but I would like to

say that whatever choice/choices you make, run with them and don't

look back. I believe in getting the best and most aggressive that

you can get. This beast is aggressive and to fight it with anything

less just does not seem right. Have faith in your choices, once

made, and keep a positive attitude. I know several folks on this

board will be responding to you that are much more qualified to give

you " technical " advice, but I am here to render support to whomever

wants it and needs it. Take care and God Bless.

Katy,

I would jump in and go for the RFA. My husbands doctor did the RFA

to the lung on a lady I met via internet. That was Dr.

Nielson in San .

Three months later she had a Dr. Cohn from Florida do RFA to her

liver and she is now in remission.

She spent the night for the RFA to the liver and out patient for the

RFA to the lung.
