Guest guest
Hi All!!! I just got off the phone with the secondary level special ed. supervisor. They just got the OK Thursday to run a middle school classroom for aspergers and HFA kids!!! The kids will have specialized instruction (slower paced, more detailed), work on organizational skills, self help and social skills will be focussed on, a place for sensory breaks, time in the general ed classes with supports, etc.. They want parental input, too! They haven't confirmed a teacher yet, but they have approached a 7th grade spec ed teacher (they will also interview for autistic teachers) who has been attending a lot of seminars about autism and aspergers and I talked to her the other day. At the most, there will be 12 kids, but about 5 are being targeted for this year. is one! I had actually called her to tell her I wanted him in it. She also took some of my concerns about life skills classes being to short and computer next year (word processing and data) being too short for this type of child and could they offer it as either for 2 marking periods for our kids or make it twice as long of a class since these are obviously very important. She agreed and will look into it!!! Our move up IEP will simply be to get him enrolled and assigned to teachers next year, and then as the school year gets closer, we will work out the details of the special placement. Is this really MY school district???? Now if I can actually get certified and in speech for next year, I think I'll just faint! Sue

Sue, i'm sooo happy for you and your son. The best thing is that they want feedback from parents- you can make a real difference for years to come- --

Guest guest
Wow, Sue - - reading on the tail end of 's reply - - I have never heard of anything this specialized for older children! This is fabulous! This is like mainstreaming, full inclusion, with a lemon twist. WONDERFUL! And it should make one seriously interesting class! ;o) How did they come up with this idea? All on their own?
