Guest guest
My x-rays show a narrowing in my neck (whatever that means), but I've been blessed not to have that kind of pain. I have pain in my shoulder and I think it's from using my walker and cane. I also have pain in my knee. I think that is due to hyper extension when I walk. My left (weak) leg locks stiff and then it extends back even more, if that makes since. Guest guest
Donna.... I thought my legs were going to turn inside out when they started locking like you explained... I also had the shoulder and knee pain.... finally gave up using the walker other than transfer from bed to chair, commode etc.. use a w/c otherwise. My other choice was ibuprofin or one of the other drugs and I didn't want that.. I use Vioxx now for the simple aches I have occasionally... It even helped the stiff neck I had last week which I think I caught from all you guys talking about it.. Never had the problem before...lol Jeanette from Tampa
Guest guest
---Donna, I know exactly what you mean about your knee. When mine starts hurting from extending it back I put on a elastic knee brace and that helps alot. I have to concentrate so it doesn't go back, but sometimes it has a mind of it's own. My ligament under my knee cap gets inflamed and I put ice on it and take some advil. Guest guest
Hi Sue & Tom Yes I do have some discomfort in my shoulders and back. Mainly when I am tired or have had a busy day (say too much gardening or too long a day on the computer at work). I only work one (paid) day a week and I volunteer for one day a week at the SA MND Office. Before my diagnosis (originally MND/ALS) I was an Assistant Commissioner in the SA State Taxation Office. But, don't hold that against me. I am not taking any drugs for the shoulders and back, it is really quite manageable to date. Guest guest
Those weak knees are awful. I have been having problems with that since August. I got my new AFO's so that my knees couldn't buckle on me..especially the left one. When it buckles, i just go down and can't stop . The things kept breaking. Screws worked there way out. I had to send them back again. The first day without them, which was Monday, I went down in the bedroom. I had my old AFO's on. Well,,that hurt. The second day , yesterday, went to lean down, and over backwards I went. I probably have two weeks to go without them at least. I have my rolling walker. I am back in my boot that I wore when my ankle was healing after the break. Had Xrays last night to makes sure I didn't rebreak it. What a pain. So everyone with those locking up knees,,be careful. There are exercises to do to strengthen the hamstrings and quads to stop that weak knee thing. I was much stronger when I went to work everyday... Guest guest
Donna: I too had narrowing of the spinal chord in my neck and had to have a fusion of C3-C4-C5-C6 as they thought that was causing my leg problems. Hopefully they will keep track of it as you wouldn't want it causing more problems. With me they called in 'spinal stenosis' as the spinal chord was being strangled by arthritis. Hopefully yours won't get worse. I only had a minimal amount of discomfort in my neck before surgery. Take care. Jo! Guest guest
Pat I've used thicket too. Dolores didn't tell you it had a few little bitty calories. > Hi Pat, > I eaves dropped on your message to Sherry. I'd like to offer a suggestion > about using a product called Thick-It. Guest guest
Welcom and Dorothy, I too welcome you to this great group, you will find lots to give you comfort that you are not alone and frequently find more than the Drs tell you. Hopefully the symposium will get some movement forward so that research can be done. I used to work at a shipping company (oceangoing vessels) and several port engineers that were Aussies, Kiwis and Scots worked there. Taken separately they were all friendly and if they talked slow I could understand them! Those Scots sure liked to argue though! I'm mostly ish myself so I guess I picked up that triat. I miss them as they all came to be good friends and most moved on to other parts of the world. My neck gets stiff very easily and I have gotten to the point of vomiting on occassi9on when it gets really bad. I had started taking Valium this last fall and it stopped the spells immediately for about 6 mos.(including my leg spasms and back spasms)on a dose of 5mg 1xday. I guess I'm either trying to do too much again or getting worse as they are back so will have to talk it over with my neuro again. I tried out the Tempurpedic pillo3ws and mattresses at tone and they felt wonderful. I just have to fit them in my budgetr now. Regards, Sue Ellen
