Guest guest
, It seems that I have become a expert on butt holes these last 3 years. Sorry folks, I hope that did not offend anyone. Seriously , has fought this problem for 3 years as you know. During radiation to the rectal area they told him to use Aquaphor cream, desenex or plain old Vaseline. A druggest gave or sold me a tube of Xylocaine 2.5%(lidocaine) ointment, that seemed to help some. He went thru boxes of prescription suppositories also. He said to tell you that the biggest relief he got was from the sitz bath. We went to pharmacy and bought a plastic one for about $12 dollars and he being a ex-plumber hooked the plastic line directly to the faucet so he got a constant flow of warm water to sit in. That gave him instant relief while he was on the bath but did not last long. Another tip is just fill the sitz with warm water and add some baking soda to it. If the rectal pain is from diahreah, use a lot of powder with corn starch in it. 's pain is easing up in the rectal area, but his was from a chronic infection to the area of the colorectal surgery. The surgeon told him it's going to take a long time to heal that area and it may never completely go away. At least he can sit down for a hour without the horrific pain he was having. Hope this help a little. Joyce > I think Bert would kill me if he knew I was posting this but hey, > modesty went out the window for me when this disease hit. Guest guest
Sounds silly but try extra virgin oilive oil, works wonders if not a wet rash, dry cornstartch helps, and leaving it slighly elevated and keeping dry. There is a french ointment, expensive but worth it. Just a thought.
Guest guest
We live in Florida, aloe is available and there is a line of Aloe products otc not expensive and work well. Aloe has a gel in the center and it is cooling and very soothing. We buy stalks, refirgerate it. Some make a tea from it. Others make a paste with rindless cucumbers and olive oil in the blender. Just a thought.
Guest guest
---Have you tried TUCKS? Little round pieces of gauze-like material saturated with a cooling-numbing medication. In a jar the last I knew. Can buy them over the counter. Guest guest
: Finally something I can maybe offer some help with. Sore bums! :-) Seems to be an ongoing issue across the generations in our family! The others have made some good suggestions. I would also add that how you treat the problem depends on what you see around the rectum. Does Bert have hemhorroids (spelling?) - if so, you will see puffy reddish, purplish grape like things around the rectum. If so, my experience is prescription works best - proctocetysyl (not sure of the spelling) works well. Haven't had much luck with over the counter stuff, other than Tucks which provide relief but don't cure the problem. If the area around the rectum is violently red, consider that he might have a yeast infection. Characteristically they sting with diarrhea. Chemo will make him more susceptible to yeast. My mother has had both vaginal yeast and yeast in her rectal area since treatment (she too would kill me for telling you that). Likewise, my son and I were passing yeast back and forth to one another while I was nursing him. He'd get it in the rectum, me in the breast. My remedy for yeast around the rectum with my two year old is canesten (for vaginal yeast infections) mixed with hydrocortisone. This is what the doctor gives in prescription form, but you can buy the stuff over the counter and mix it yourself (told to me by the pharmacist). If you use it and it works, then you'll know it was yeast. Hydrocortisone alone will also work on many types of rashes, but it is a steroid cream, so you'll want to start with a low dose, which is the only kind available over the counter (check with pharmacist as I'm in Canada and I know drug availability is different there). And, of course, this is all meds (albeit not so high risk) so it is probably a good idea to check with your doctor at some point. I tend to be quite confident with all of this because I used to be a nurse, but I'm less confident telling other people they should do it, because I don't know personal histories. By the way, if it is yeast and it is a chronic problem, cutting back on sugar and taking caprylic acid and grapefruit seed extract (available in health stores) works nicely to control the problem. And vaseline and desitin will work probably once the major irritation is gone, to prevent future problems if it is applied regularly, (but you need to cure what's causing the irritation first). Could use Tucks to clean after each BM and then apply an ointment. Good luck.
