Hi Bill,

I don't know much about talking meters, but I saw a segment on ACB Ratio on

Main Menu where they made a standard FreeStyle Flassh talk while it was

hooked up to a computer. If they could make something like this small enough

to fit in the meter case and make it totally portable it would be fantastic.

I use the Flash as my meter, using a magnifier to see the screen, and I

really like it (my pump also uses the FreeStyle Flash strips in its meter

that snaps onto the back, but like the rest of the pump this doesn't talk).

Jenn, that sounds very interesting, getting a meter to talk on the computer.

Do you have some idea of how long ago that segment was on ACB? Since they

quit labeling programs with content, it is hard to find anything. Actually,

since Jonathon quit doing it, the program has been hardly worth listening

to, but that is an aside and does not reflect the opinion of staff or

management...

I agree with you about and acb radio. I miss his leadership and

direction with it, and I wish they would bring him back. Then I am sure the

quality of acbradio will improve.

Hi ,

I'm not sure when it was, but it was fairly recently (like within the past

year or two). They had a demonstration of someone testing using the meter

and the computer program providing the speech. I don't listen to the program

much since athan left, but I also don't trust the guy's opinions anymore

after he left HumanWare for Freedom Scientific (but that's for another

list).

Bill,

they make the contact plus, which beeps the results! It isn't quite as easy as

yours, but works pretty good, and it is self-coding. It uses a drum of strips,

which brings out the strip on its own without having to insert it!

Never mind, found Accu-Chek instructions

Rather than browse for the little booklet, I looked online and sure enough

there was an animated-with-sound set of instructions on how to code, and it

was very simple, problem solved.

I like the Aviva because it really does take a very small amount of blood

and most of the time is totally painless. What I don't know is how a totally

blind person would ever be able to use it though, and I don't know if

there's a comparable meter to it that would talk for a blind user. For me,

it works well because I can see the big numbers on it, and I also like the

large strip size that makes it easy to hold. You merely place the black end

which has a little yellow line in the middle, up to the finger you pricked,

just for a brief second, and it will draw just enough blood to make the

yellow line turn red, and that's it. You don't need to hold it there or

anything. Five seconds later, you have your results. I didn't think I'd like

the meter at first, but I guess it won me over.

I know there's a lot of talk about the Prodigy meter, never have seen one so

don't know how good it is, but my hope is that one day there'll be an

Accu-Chek meter as easy to use as mine that a totally blind person can use.

The gentleman working on the project is at Bay Area Digital!

He mentioned on the program that they were hoping to have a stand alone package

by this fall, but no further word yet!

I like the drum idea so you don't have to handle putting in the strips, but

at least what I have is quite workable. At least the strips are large enough

that for most people they should be easy to use.

The meter you are talking about is being processed (and invented) by

Grey-former Pres. Of ACB. I am supposed to be a tester for the

thing when it is ready. As I have not heard from him, I'm guessing it

is not yet ready!

I don't know anything about this meter. I must admit I haven't been monitoring

this thread. Is this a meter that will compete with a meter like the Prodigy

Voice? What are the strips expected to cost per 50 count bottle? Thanks.

Dave,

This thread is talking about a company who is trying to take a modern

mainstream meter, the FreeStyle Flash, and add speech output to it. So far

they have done so by using a computer program and are trying to manufacture

something that would allow the meter to be portable with speech.

Thanks Jen. Sounds like they've got a little work ahead of them.
