Guest guest
Is it wrong to think of strangling a snotty Certified Diabetes Educator? OK -- I ADMIT I started our little war, when I began by emphasizing the amount of grief I'd gotten at work when the diabetes education center cancelled our appointment last week all of four hours before it was scheduled to happen. 45 minutes into the appointment, while discussing the problem of kidney damage, CDE comes out with " and if you're on dialysis you have to have it three times a week, and imagine what that would do to your schedule. " I WAS tempted to shoot back, but decided to let my blood pressure speak for me (elevated bp isn't good for kidneys, especially if they've got trouble with giant-sized, glucose-stuffed red blood cells, or so I've read): 108/64. Not bad for someone who's trying to control his tongue. Now if only I had the stamina and waistline I had when I was 18.... THEN, when she gave me a tour of the place (why?), she pointed out the large group of nurses going through CDE training, and pointed out one of the trainers (who also teaches patients). " She starts her classes by saying 'I have cancer. I can't control that, but you can control diabetes.' " or something like that. Now I'm really steamed again: Officially, I know nothing, absolutely nothing, but if Ms. CDE knew what was going on where I work, she wouldn't be so quick to play the cancer card. As the piece de resistance, when we're scheduling me for the set of four actual classes, they want to put me in June. I point out my authorization letter from the HMO and physician's group specify the permisson for this particur benefit expires June 16, 2004 (which sounds heartless, but you should know the permission got to me a month late due to a problem with the physician's group -- the HMO has actually been pretty good about this particular benefit). The punch line: This particular CDE is better than a psychologist -- our two hour session was all of 90 minutes long. BUT in her favor, she DID field some tough questions, gave me some great answers and gave me some solid leads on some of the questions she couldn't answer -- not a bad performance when confronted by me in my " irate " setting. I promise to do much much better when I meet the nutritionist. Leone, rleone@... " Only you can prevent long sig files.
