Guest guest
I did something similar last night... i drizzled em with olive oil and sprinkled em with Spike... then put them in the same baking dish as my steak (which was also drizzled with olive oil and some other spices) and they turned out very nicely. I'd never before in my life tried turnips and I was pleasantly surprised... " thumbs up " for now :-) -Marlena in DC > >Reply-To: Atkins_Support_List >To: " 'Atkins_Support_List ' " ><Atkins_Support_List > >Subject: Speaking of turnips..... >Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 09:24:35 -0800 > >I'm trying out a new thing tonight. Guest guest
I too was impressed with the turnip. It was wonderful in my pork roast. Today I bout a jimica. I have heard that they too can be a potato substitut. Does anyone have any advice on it? I was thinking of frying it like regular fried potatoes. --- Marlena M wrote: > I did something similar last night... i drizzled em with olive oil and > sprinkled em with Spike... then put them in the same baking dish as my steak > (which was also drizzled with olive oil and some other spices) and they > turned out very nicely. Guest guest
I haven't tried jicama, but daikon radishes are a good potatoe substitute. Kirstie
Guest guest
Marlena, what kind of steak were you baking? I have to try turnips. Grandma Hut who has never baked a steak. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Kathy, I've used jicima as a potato substitute with good success. I cube it up into 1/2 " sized pieces and fry it in bacon grease like American fries. It is more fibrous than potato, so it retains more crunch. And it has a sweet-ish flavor. It's pretty good. Guest guest
I typically buy NY strip steaks or whatever else looks yummy :-) In cooking it I just put it in a baking dish, liberally drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with spices (usually fresh ground pepper, garlic, and Montreal Spicy Steak seasoning) and then slice up some onions on top and put it in the oven on BAKE and 350 degrees for about 45 min (adjust time and temp for however you like your steak... i.e. rare to well done). When I added the turnips last night I just washed, peeled, sliced and quartered them then tossed them in olive oil and Spike seasoning before placing them in the baking dish around the steak and let the whole thing cook. Before this WOE i don't think I ever actually had cooked a steak so I'm sure there are lots of ways to do it... my limited culinary skills tend to stick with this way since it is so fool proof... hey, even =I= can do it!
