Guest guest
Hello All, I wondered if anyone could share their experience with getting on disability. I know that Stage IV cc with multiple mets is an automatic qualification, but I have read that it can take as long as 4 months to begin recieving payment. Has anyone else in the group had any experience with this yet? The Oxali/xeloda treatments are really beginning to wear me down making work very difficult for me to continue. Dale M. Guest guest
I do know that if your employer has put your disability paperwork through it is a little easier. Get certification from your Oncologist in either case. My understanding is it will take about 3-4 months. Is there a Social Worker at your Cancer Center that can work with you? Guest guest
Hi Dale, You will qualify but you have to be disabled for five full months before payment starts for Social Security disability. My husband qualified on Feb.6, so Feb. didn't count. He didn't receive his first check until Sept. 19. Guest guest
-He was diagnosed stage 3 in January 2000 reoccurred in January 2003. All we did was contact social security. It was all handled over the phone and through the mail. You can check the progress of your claim online. Judy -- In colon_cancer_support , dalesfish@a... wrote: > Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
Dale, My hubby got an SSI check about 2 mos. after applying. His disability checks won't start until Jan though. We didn't need no lawyer or anything. It was pushed right through. tammy SSI Disability Hello All, I wondered if anyone could share their experience with getting on disability. Guest guest
-SSI is supplemental security income and is not the same as social security disability. Also, Medicare does not start until you are on disability for two years. You may be able to qualify sooner. -- In colon_cancer_support , " tamela scott " <nanatam@e...> wrote: > Dale, > > My hubby got an SSI check about 2 mos. after applying. Guest guest
Hello Dale, My husband is on Social Security Disability. His last day of work was May 21st. We applied June 4th. In July, his surgeon diagnosed with recurrent colon cancer and gave him 9 months to live. His supplement security insurance started in July, they gave him a predetermination that he would be eligible, so they started payments then. This is only given until Social Security kicks in. There is a 5 month waiting period from date of application once the determination is made that you are disabled. During this time he received Supplemental Security Income and we were all able to receive medicaid. ( By the way, Social Security pays for the last month on the third of the next month. eg. Novembers payment on December 3rd) He got his first Social Security check in December, they then took away Medicaid. We have to wait 24 months to be eligible for medicare. Also, if you have children or a spouse who might be eligible to draw, they will have to apply separately after a determination is made. We did not know this and would not have received any payment for our two boys if we had not called. They do not automatically apply for dependents. They must apply separately. It is not hard to apply. Just have a list of all doctors, addresses and medical history. I wrote out a whole timeline for Jeff, his treatment, doctors, etc...and made a copy and included in papers that were sent for signatures. You will have to stop work first then apply. You can apply on the phone, then they send the papers to you through the mail. If you want to do it in person make sure to make an appointment, as wait times at the social security office are extremely long. They don't count the month you apply as part of the 5 month waiting period. If you are working I would continue to work until the last week of the month, then quit and apply. This way you still have income for the month and it won't affect your Social security. Also, if your work has short term disability make sure to get that started to. We found it pretty easy and I think if your doctors are good at responding back it is fairly quick. Hope this helps. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Happy New Year.
