Guest guest
Hi Mandy, When I initially went to my doctor with 'palpitations', before I was diagnosed with Afib and had tests with the cardiologist etc, he prescribed the beta blocker Astemizole. I had what sounds similar. I would be woken in the night by short spells of Afib and they would last minutes, and then everything would normalise and then later I would awake again with a short Afib attack. This went on all night and when I called him the next day he said stop the Astemizole. When I went to see the cardiologist, he put me down as beta blocker intolerant due to this. I was asleep when it ocurred and it never started during the day so my heart rate presumably was lower than normal waking time, as yours is , but I wouldnt like to guess at the cause. Sorry I cant be much more help than that. It stopped the day after I stopped the meds. Haze Re: Going back on old meds HELP! --- I decided, with my cardio's permission, to try going back on verapamil 240mg, after being on Toprol XL for six months. I average two to three attacks a month on Toprol, and used to have good results with the verapamil for many years. Well, let me tell you, it hasn't been a good experience!!! I have been going in and out of fib all day long! My heart rate is slow, so the Dr. that I called said don't take any other meds today. It has been the oddest fib I've ever experienced. Fib for awhile then normal beats, then fib again for awhile and then normal beats. Anyone ever expeienced this before? My fibs have never done this before. Usually during a fib attack it is in fib until it converts back to NSR, NOT in and out like this is. It must be that my heart is not responding to the verapamil after being on Toprol for so long, and is rebelling somehow? Any body with a story to share? I NEED comfort right now! Guest guest
Mandy it's Michele This is how I live. in and out of fib all day long. With sometimes prolonged beats in between. It is a horrible way to live. I hope that the doctor can find the correct meds for me . I am Cardizem LA for two weeks and Coumadin. I don;t know how long it will take to kick in. Guest guest
We should not give medical advice here. You're taking meds without doctors permission, Verapamil vs. Toprol XL and you are having a reaction that you are not familiar with. If it was me, and my heart was doing something it has not done before, I would head for the ER. yomandy39 wrote: >--- I decided, with my cardio's permission, to try going back on >verapamil 240mg, after being on Toprol XL for six months. Mandy Of CA> xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I don't know if I can give you any comfort but when I have an afib episode it seems my heart will tease me by giving 3 or 4 or 5 beats at what seems like normal spacing and then has about 3 or 4 fast beats. It can be very frustrating. This has been since I started amiodarone and I always have self converted, usually with exercise. Perhaps you are still in afib when it seems you are in NSR. As a result the heart does not have to work as hard. It is also used as a rate control drug because it lowers your heart rate. It is not a rhythm control drug.
