Like many of you, mine has to be to increase exercise. I need help! I would welcome the things that everyone does to get exercise. I am especially looking for things I can get some fun from doing, hoping then I might be more likely to stick to it. I can think of lots of things, but think of lots of reasons why each one of them isn't interesting. I keep thinking if I could come up with something that was like a game, something where I can keep score and compete against myself, I might be more likely to stick to it. Increasing steps or time on the treadmill doesn't cut it because being on the treadmill just isn't fun or interesting. Being totally blind, something like tennis or handball isn't practical, but maybe you have come up with something you can do that is fun, so you enjoy doing it. Any suggestions will be most appreciated. I am open to anything. The best New Year! SS
Guest guest
Ah, , thanks. I am 50. I am very deconditioned, but other than total blindness I have no physical restrictions. I just passed a stress test without any alarms. I work from home in a very sedentary job, so I don't even have the walking to and from the bus. My only exercise is the refrigerator run and used to be the 12-ounce curl. Thanks! Guest guest
besides a thirty minute walk two or three times each week, which builds aerobic endurance. I would recommend anaerobic exercises, which build muscle Most of your immune system is located in your muscles. Muscles burn carbohydrates whereas fat does not. Excessive carbs in the form of glucose is in fact converted to fat, if it is not used to make the muscles go. The cheapest way to build muscles is to start doing floor exercises in the form of sit-ups, pushups, and squats. If you have about 21 square feet of available space and a thin cushion, you can get started today. If you know what DOMS is , it is a no-brainer as to what it takes to build muscles. After 11 months of no exercising I started doing floor exercises the beginning of December. You can challenge yourself every time after the DOMS is over. I remember the time when I could not do a single regular pushup, and several months later I was doing 150 pushups every time I did them. Then for no reason I just stopped all exercises, and just concentrated on diet, and especially counting carbs. While my A1C's remain excellent lower than 5.5, I noticed I was getting weaker and having less endurance. So earlier this month I decided to get back to the task of muscle building and endurance building. Do your floor exercises in sets. I try to do three sets of the same exercise, and between sets I wait until my breathing and heart rate return to normal before doing another set. A set of exercises is composed of doing a number of repetitions of the same exercise in each set. You do the repetitions until you get the burn. I usually get the burn in the third set. For instance today I did a total of 50 pushups in three sets of 15, 15, 20. I also did 80 situps in three sets of 25, 25, 30. After you experience the muscle burn and the DOMS is over, you can increase your goal for the next time. DOMS means Delayed Muscle Onset Soreness. When I was young I got over the DOMS in two days usually, but now that I am old it takes three and some times four days for the DOMS to go away. That old saying is true. No pain, no gain. So challenge yourself to build muscle. You will feel better for doing it. Ideas for Exercise With the coming new year, we have new year resolutions. Guest guest
, thanks for that. I have tried some of those suggestions and my real problem is motivation; well, if not exactly that, because heart disease and kidney failure, along with generally feeling bad and out of shape should be plenty of motivation for anyone. This is something I know I can do if I just find that one thing that clicks. It took me from the second cigarette to the last and about 30 years to quit smoking, but if I could do that, I can do anything. I had hoped a lot more people would give examples of the things they do. But, I do thank you and Harry for what works for you and maybe they will be ideas that work for someone else. Great new year! Guest guest
Hi , To exercise I usually either swim or go on an elliptical or exercise bike at the gym. When I was living with my parents (I'm 26 so was until recently) they had an elliptical in their basement that I used. My apartment is too small to have one now but I might get an exercise bike that folds up. The pool and gym are within walking distance or a short bus ride away, so I am trying to do that. My main barrier is time - working full-time and going to school doesn't leave me much time for exercise! Another option would be walking if you can use a cane well enough to pick up a good pace, or use a guide dog, or can find someone sighted who is willing to go with you. Guest guest
Hi , I find that one of the best exercises for me, is dancing! I go dancing a couple of times a week! I also walk and run on the spot while I am watching TV, (Jeopardy) of course! I walk around the block (a long one) a couple of times in the morning before work! Walking around the block, is safe, no crossing streets! If you live in an apartment building the stairs are great! Just pretend that you are checking your mail, or putting out the garbage a few times a day! Listening to music while walking, and trying to follow the beat! Hope this helps! Guest guest
erik, you could call a friend and ask them to take you out for a walk once or twice a week to start. that is a social outing and end it with a coffee and chat. if you havent done anything for a long time you have to start slow. but it is so important to make it fun too. enjoy it and you will stick with it. good luck. karen Re: Ideas for Exercise erik, may i suggest if you have a treadmill, use a cordless headset and you can lisiten to music or your favourite talking book and the time will go by faster and your walking on the treadmill will be a lot more interesting. karen

Guest guest
Before I started having problems with ulcers on the bottom of my feet, I used to do the “Walk Away the Pounds” videos put out by Sansone. They were easy and fun (if you can call exercise fun). Most exercise videos are impossible to follow if you are blind, but hers are easy. But I haven’t been able to use these for a few years. Guest guest
Becky, I don't know your schedule, but have you checked out the exercise program aired on the radio reading service. I believe it is for 20 minutes every morning at 10:40. I have only caught one, but it sounds as though they are for people who can move about or chair bound. I have meant to ask someone, and maybe Greg knows, if we can get that program in MP3 or somehow rather than having to be tied to the radio at that time of day. I am not really sure if they are archived on line. Re: Ideas for Exercise It sounds like you are ruling out floor exercises for yourself. You might try some 12 ounce curls. Guest guest
I haven't tried that , but thanks. That reminds me I have also heard of a Pilates CD that is accessible for blind people and have heard good things about it. I keep thinking of ordering it because Pilates are mostly done on the floor and wouldn't require me to stand which is still a problem for me. If anyone wants info on ordering this CD, I'll try to find it again. Guest guest
Hi all, good suggest5ions. I want to add that I have been using my exercise bike for 2 years or more, , starting with my diagnosis for diabetes. I'll tell you, you can lost weight with that thing. I lost a lot of weight, and mostly with the bike. I enjoy riding it with music, the right tempo at least sometimes to keep me rieding quickly. It is actually alot of fun, or is for me, when I get going and am not putting it off, which unfortunately I do from time to time. I later got a treadmil, which is good, but I still like the bile better. I also have a jump rope, which I haven't used since I was a kid, and am almost afraid of the thing, but hopefully will start soon, as it has great promise for exercise if you don't kill yourself doing it. One more thing: I don't walk as well as when I had my gide dog, and Jenn's idea of a sighted guide is a great one for exercise, though we all want to be independent. When I go with my daughter I can't keep up to her, and that is a good thing. Vicki Breffe In a changing world, we can trust God's unchanging word. Guest guest
, you should not have to give up anything that you love doing!! You have a partner, and keeping in contact with your partner, helps you to keep you balance, and you always have a reference point. If you concentrate on the music, you don't even notice that you are moving around! Have you tried dancing? Guest guest
, I used to love dancing and Friday nights would go dancing from nine to twelve thirty and loved it. then five years ago I became blind overnight. the last year and half it is so very black. if on the treadmill I have a handle on both sides to hang onto which in a sense would be like have a partner to hold onto. my husband is a singer and he is generally singing and I in the audience at the time. we have only been to a couple of dances in the last five years. be fore I knew him I remember doing a waltz. this was like floating on a cloud when you have a good partner. even fast dancing I would be afraid of hitting someone when moving around. you need a good sense of balance don't you. Guest guest
Hi , One of my favorite exercises of all time was jumping rope because it didn't take up much room, you could do it on a sidewalk, patio or in a garage and it really melted down the pounds. However, since I had surgery for a ruptured disk in 1995, jumping rope is too high an impact exercise to me to do anymore and, like you, I make my living sitting down. However, I still have an exercise bike which I ride and am a weight-lifter, which I've done since 1980. The bike was a Christmas present in 1996 and, if my daughter is around, I always ask her what she wants from Graeter's if I ride by there on my stationary bike!! Of course it depends on what you can get motivated about. I'd love to read books while exercising; however, I sweat so much that earphones would get pretty yucky. I sometimes will turn up the radio and listen to football or basketball games while exercising, but I most just exercise. Running up and down stairs is a wonderful exercise--which was the only thing that I was ever good at while on thewrestling team at OSSB as a freshman. In college, the marching band took care of every bit of energy I had during fall quarter, but I ran those inside stairs in the Stadium Dorm, especially if I could find a set which wasn't heavily trafficked. By wearing sweats and running about a hundred sets of steps, it kept those pounds at bay pretty well. Also, we've been to French Lick, IN twice for vacations and they have so serious hills which, if I had to walk every day, I'm sure that I'd either lose the weight or stay at the bottom!! While we're on the exercise subject, does anyone know where to get blind-oriented instructions for workouts on an exercise bike? Actually, I've ridden at a comfortable speed for a specified amount of time, then asked my wife to look at the printed odometer and, then taking advantage of that five years of calculus I had at Ohio State, I can figure out how far I've ridden, what I had for lunch and where I was ten years ago!! So, , now you know way too much about my exercising likes and dislikes. Good luck and write with questions if you have them.
