Has anyone any experience with this?

I went to see my doctor yesterday, and she wants me to go on the medically

supervised liquid diet to " spark " my metabolism, since it doesn't seem to be

responding. I had a full physical, and my tests all came back normal.

Has anyone ever done this kind of diet, and can you tell me what I might

expect if I do decide to do it?

Thanks!

I don't know much about the liquid diets, except that they don't teach you

how to eat properly. Exactly what about a liquid diet does the doctor think

will 'spark' your metabolism? What are the ingredients that you will be

consuming? Do you know how many calories, whether it's protein or carbs?

I don't know if having the same thing meal after meal would be boring and

lead to cravings or would be really freeing because you wouldn't have to

think about what you were going to have?

I wonder if there are any support lists for the liquid diets that you could

join and get some opinions about them?

Good stuff Jorgi! Have we ever tried to tweak you on Atkins? Have you

done the sending in menus bit to see if there are any potential trouble

spots you might want to investigate?

I don't know the history of the person posting the

original question since I've only just rejoined the

list. Don't know how long you've been doing Atkins or

what your weight loss rate has been so far.

But I have to agree that extreme caution is called

for. For some reason this language: " medically

supervised " , " spark your metabolism " description

really sets off warning bells for me. It sounds like

something you would hear on a late night infomercial!

It sounds almost like that thing they had Huggy Bear's

wife on - is Huggy still on the list? - where they

gave her shakes just loaded with sugar and carbs and

her blood sugar control was just horrible. And she

complained that the 'nutritionists' she had to see

were more like salespeople pitching their supplements.

When I last heard she was in the proces of ditching

that diet(How's she doing, Huggy?)

If all your tests are normal (normal thyroid, etc.) I

think the best thing you can do for your metabolism is

to stay on plan and make sure you are exercising.

That's something I keep vowing to be better about, and

in fact hubby and I just joined a gym to hopefully

help us keep our resolve. You should also carefully

check your diet for possible stallers, of course.

But I'd demand to know all kinds of details about this

liquid diet before signing up...any ultra-low-calorie

diet, even if it's not high-carb, will not 'spark your

metabolism' but will in fact slow it down.

Good Luck.,

Anne

About 11 or 12 years ago I was " put on " a liquid diet called Medi Fast. I had

5 shakes a day the equaled 435 calories total. I had ONLY the shakes. I lost

quite a bit of weight and looked " damned fine " (if I do say so myself! LOL).

We had to go to classes to teach us about re-introducing food and it was done

slowly. I also had to have blood tests each week to check for liver damage.

That should have sent me a warning.... luckily I had none. I started adding

food back gradually. example: 4 shakes and 1/2 cup mixed lettuce for 3 days,

then 1 cup lettuce, then 2 slices of cucumber, then about 2 inces of carotts-

sliced (no dressing at all at this point) This is when I started to gain my

weight back! If you can imagine a salad a day with no dressing, a bit of

carrot and a couple slices of cucumber makkiing you gain!

To make a long story short although I lost and looked great by eating I gained

it all back. Over the following 11 years I gained about 140 pounds. My advice

is to send us your menues and let us help you before you go liquid. It may

take some time and a lot of tweaking.... I know because I was one of the

slowest ones around. I started out at 315+ and (drum roll, big band, and

dancers....) this morning I was 264.75 on the DOCTORS scales! But I stayed in

the 272 to 275 bracket for about 5 months! The only cheat I have had since

last April was two bites of a Red Lobster biscuit at Christmas time. But man

did that biscuit make my belly hurt!

Anyway.... post your menues with everything that goes in your mouth... food,

drink, gum, mint, nut, snack...everything!

I was on a modified version of Medifast 10 years ago, too. I only

wanted to loose 30 lbs. in 10 weeks. I had 4 shakes a day plus dinner.

At first dinner was meat & veg. and then slowly reintroduced the rest.

I did really well and I loved the shakes.

The only problem with this type of diet is that over the following

10 years I gained back the 30 plus an extra 40 for a total of 70

lbs.!!

It may be ok for you to do, since you have a plan once you go off

the liquid diet. I didn't and just went back to my old eating habits.

Good Luck to you and keep us posted.

My experience with Optifast was pretty much the same --- plus, it cost me close to $2,000, and less than a year later I had to have emergency gall bladder surgery. I had turned jaundiced from gall stones blocking some tube. It was in the news about that time that liquid diets in some way (I can't remember exactly) contribute to gall stones.

I think there's some discussion in one of Atkins'

books about gall bladder problems. If I recall

correctly, eating fat causes the gall bladder to

contract and function normally. Eating an

low-fat-diet for a long time can contribute to the

formation of gall stones.

And then after that, if you go back to eating fat the

gall bladder will start contracting again and the

stones might give you symptoms, or block up your

tubes, or just generally cause trouble.

Jorgi:

I was on Medifast for several months 5 or 6 years ago (the same year Oprah

Winfrey lost so much weight on her liquid diet). I lost 40 pounds on it.

As I remember, you drink a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, and I

think you get a small (generally low fat) meal for supper.

Hope this helps!
