If I'm remembering correctly, the hams Sam's carries are gf as long as you don't add the "glaze packet".

RE: Fw: Ask the Expert

Just as an aside, it may not be her graduation...and her mom probably didn't realize it wasn't ok. Everyone makes mistakes, even those of us in the middle of dealing with this make mistakes. I realized just the other day that I was assuming something was ok, thankfully it was but still...and the only Celiac is my 3 year old son. Sometimes we just let our guards down by accident. My mother in law ordered a ham from a local place at Christmas, never even giving it a thought. I, however, knew it wasn't GF and told her so but it was too late so we brought ham for my son. She's normally GREAT about being sure everything is GF and she just never even thought that there could be anything "gluten" about a ham. She knows now, though...

Honeybaked ham is nowhere near GF. There is considerable wheat starch in the"honey flavoring" (same with field honey glazed hams and the "honeypowder" solde at bulkfoods.com). Their "expert" on wheat starch has no ideawhat he is talking about -- even specially processed "gf wheat starch" inthe EU and UK has some wheat protein left; what is sold in the US has levelsfar above the allowed levels in even the most liberal countries (and a fairnumber of people have reactions to any amount, even an "allowed" amount). You can special order an unglazed ham -- but why not just buy yourself a(cheaper) smithfield spiral cut ham and heat it yourself? Then you canglaze or not, as desired. And if it is for your graduation, I would insist she change the menu tosomething you can eat (it's hard to believe parents do this to their kids,at least you don't expect much better from strangers).-----Original Message-----My mom is having a graduation party with a honeybaked ham and I wondered itit was safe to eat. Here is their response. I'm guessing from the replythat I won't be eating any. What does everyone else think? It is good toknow that you can get one without the glaze but unfortunately it is too latefor us to order on that way.---[This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]

Too funny!  That's where she ended up getting the ham :)

As a side note, I would like to thank all of you who think that I am young enough to be having a graduation :)  Sadly, mine are many years in my past!

Not all brands - the field is glazed already and has wheat starch in

the " honey powder " ingredient. It was not listed at all on the ingredient

list, but was confirmed by the company when contacted via phone. They

recommended the plain spiral cut ham instead (for their brand)
