Has anyone heard of one ear going deaf in PLS?

My one ear is completely deaf - all of a sudden - it happened on New

Year's Day and has not come back yet.

I went to the Ear Specialist and he confirmed that it is deaf but can't

tell me why.

Raine,

My right ear has gone " bad " since PLS. Shortly after my

diagnosis (18 months after onset of first symptoms) I

started on baclofen. The dosage of 30mg was to be

increased " gradually " on the following time schedule:

10mg for 3-4 days taken in the morning, then add another

10mg for the next 3-4 days to be taken at noon, and

finally adding another 10mg at night. Well, it turned out

that I had a VERY rare reaction to the baclofen because

my body's balancing center couldn't adjust to that kind of

dosages that quickly. As a result, after 1 month on

baclofen I started to get what I thought at the time was an

ear infection. My ear went numb to the touch, it felt like it

was building up internal pressure inside (liquid), I would

get extremely dizzy if I bent over or tipped my head to one

side or the other, and my hearing was much reduced. To

make a long story short, I went to my doctor several times

to get antibiotics for the " infection, " but nothing worked and

it just got worse. She finally sent me to an ear specialist

(far too late to save my hearing in that ear). He diagnosed

me with Meniere's Disease which was a crock of you know

what because I haven't had a recurrence of the dizziness

since that time and my ear pressure slowly went away.

However, tinnitus (ringing in the ear) set in and the hearing

gradually has worsened since then until now I don't hear

much out of that ear at all.

My neurologist checks hearing in both ears every time I

visit, so during my next visit he was surprised to find I had

lost my hearing in that ear. When I described the

symptoms I had and the treatment regime and diagnosis

of the specialist, he looked up the side effects for baclofen

and said I probably had a rare reaction to it. That seemed

the most likely explanation to me and from now on I

always up any drug dosage in 1/2 increments giving that

dosage 10-14 days for my body to adjust before increasing

it more.

I know this isn't exactly what you described, but for me --

one day my ear was fine and the next day it suddenly had

a lot of pressure built up inside causing hearing loss.

thanks , what is a bone conduction aid? it is always such a surprise to

hear positive news at an appointment, i hope you enjoyed it!

i have to say that i was most surprised when the audioligist said Josh had

tested at normal! i wish i'd had a camera for the tiger headband ears ...

hoping that it'll be one of those life-long memories that just sticks in

there :0)
