Guest guest
Jagan, I have some difficulty getting up from bed in the morning as that is the time my muscles are at their weakest. I do daily stretching exercises and sit-up and leg lifts to strengthen my stomach muscles, so in the morning I slide my right leg over to the edge of the bed and bend that leg at the knee so that the foot is near the floor, then I do a " sit-up " which means I have to help by grabbing the back portion of my thighs and pulling with my arms to help reach the full sitting up position. Then I swing the other leg off of the bed with my arms behind me to help brace myself from falling backwards again! Some days if I am already on my right side, I can push up with my left hand enough to get my right elbow under me and then continue to push up into a sitting position while sliding my legs onto the floor. This is much harder for me and I often give up, roll on my back, and do the above. What I REALLY find harder than getting OUT of bed is turning OVER in bed. Guest guest
Lyndal, I am not talking about getting up from bed to a standing position. I am talking about getting up on the bed itself to a on all fours position. Bed is only a convenient substitute for floor, to practice. We find it difficult to get up when we fall - on the floor. There we don't get the advantage to hang our legs out unless we crawl to a nearby stairs if any. Jagan. From lyndalgbrown@... Guest guest
You are right Jagan. Sorry, I misread your message. To attain the crawling position in order to find a handy and firm item from which to pull myself up, I practice getting up and down off of the floor instead of using a bed. Although the bed is nice and soft in case you " overbalance at take off, " I find it not firm enough for my inner balance ability. I once found myself falling towards my bed and thought, " That's okay, at least I'll land softly. " But instead I found that I bounced right off of the bed & onto the floor. And several times while trying exercises on my bed I almost rolled off onto the floor. So I don't trust it anymore. Instead I practice on my nice firm (but padded) carpet. So, from a sleeping position, I do a sit-up as I described before, then I pull on my right leg bending it in toward my left thigh and then roll over to my right while placing my hands down for balance and at the same time pushing to allow the momentum to pivot me over onto my hands and knees. Then I crawl to a place which is at the right height and firm enough to support me in standing up. So, in rating my " getting up " ability? I'd say it falls (pun intended) between " easy " and with " some difficulty " . Guest guest
Hi Jagan, Like Lyndal I think this manuever is much easier when done on the floor. The bed is too flexible. But I am not going to get on the floor to practice. Getting into the all-fours position is fairly easy. But it is difficult for me to get up even after I crawl over to an immoveable object.
