She always was hard at work making a difference with issues concerning the health concerns of the children who took "hits" via the placental barrier. Breastfeeding was extra "hits". PJ was a wonderful wife and dedicated mother to her children. She worked so very hard for the children's issues concerning the harm these devices (breast implants) have caused not only her own girls, but for all the many other innocent little ones who suffer. She was a very good friend to so very many and will be greatly missed. We ALL must pull together even tighter now as we all walk the same path to gain "the truth" that we all seek

especially for the innocent ones, the children of this great earth in which we all live. Brent saw was " Brockovich," the story of an ordinary woman who excelled at getting money from a big corporation for people poisoned by toxins. Mrs. Brent found her own poison to fight against right under her skin. The breast implants she received in 1982 --- which she

believed caused her health problems and those of her two youngest children --- led her to launch a worldwide crusade against implants. "She had been in Washington testifying and on CNN Headline News and in newspapers and on radio, all in an effort to say don't let women have breast implants, because it killed her," said her husband, Ed Brent of Sandy Springs. Jeanne "P.J." Brent, 49, of Sandy Springs, died Monday from injuries sustained when she jumped from a Dunwoody parking garage. The funeral was Thursday. Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors was in charge of

arrangements. A native of Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. Brent moved to Atlanta in 1983 and met her second husband when both worked for Delta Airlines. Mrs. Brent had started with the company as a flight attendant a few years after high school. Shortly after she and Mr. Brent married in 1984, she began suffering from a connective tissue disease. "She

told me on a good day it felt like you were getting out of bed with the flu," said Mr. Brent. "You know, that achy, draggy feeling." Mrs. Brent was already the mother of four healthy children, but her fifth child, born in 1985, has gastrointestinal problems that make it difficult for her to swallow. Her sixth child has constant stomach problems, aching legs and mysterious rashes, said her husband. It became clear to Mrs. Brent, her husband said, that the toxins the children ingested from breast-feeding was the cause. "One of my daughters sleeps in leg braces and walks like a drunk because she has no feeling in her feet," said Mr. Brent. "But her mother gave her such self-esteem. She doesn't think there's anything she can't do." After reading a newspaper article describing her symptoms perfectly, Mrs. Brent had the implants removed in 1992. Still, guilt and concern about the effect the implants had on her children lingered. "She struggled with the fact that her poor decision affected her children," said her friend Elna Sheetz of Sandy Springs. Mrs. Brent joined Children Afflicted by Toxic Substances (CATS), which provides information about children whose mothers had breast implants. Mrs. Brent and the organization were featured in a

1995 article in Redbook magazine. Even as her various disorders sapped her strength, she spent hours in e-mail conversations with women all over the globe looking for information on implants. She also car pooled for her children and volunteered at her church. "She had this angelic personality. She was a very sweet and caring woman who took the time to listen and get back to people and make sure they got the information they needed," said Jama Russano of Northport, N.Y., founder of CATS. "But it's difficult to fight a battle when you're sick yourself. She must have felt that she exhausted everything she had." The day after PJ died, a yellow stickie with pointers to the names of her family members, that had been stuck on her amazing CNN video, out of seeming nowhere, floated to my bed. again and again, and could not believe that someone with the strength and clarity and power and passion with which she spoke ~ just 3 months earlier ~ could no longer be with us. the years. My conversation with him was one of the more meaningful in my life. He has 7 children, 6 with PJ, and they were the loves of each others lives. His response to my query as to what he thought of the possibility of very foul play was, "We haven't ruled it out." He did feel, however, that she had been in such pain, and because she had left her wallet home when she went shopping, and parked at the edge of the top lot, keys in the car, no other footprints, that it seemed deliberate. What we all know is that anything is possible. Ed gave us full permission to tell her story and share with the media what has happened to their family because of her decision to get breast implants. On May 1st, 2000 P.J. sent me an e-mail stating she had contacted a senior researcher at the FDA and he said there were still no studies going on regarding the children because there was "no interest" from the powers that be to study the kids. P.J. initially reported her adverse event by MedWatch to the FDA and received a letter from the FDA dated August 28, 1992 following up on her report of adverse reactions to gel-filled implants. They asked for permission to contact her doctor to obtain a medical assessment of her health

status, but ultimately told her to call them back if she received a diagnosis of polymyositis or scleroderma. P.J. had six children. Four born before implants were perfectly healthy. The two born afterwards have many health problems similar to those we hear often in networking with implanted women across the country. P.J. again contacted the FDA when her daughter was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Neuropathy, Esophageal Motility Disorder, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Asthma, and joint pain among other symptoms. They told her they could not include a child in their study. In P.J.'s most recent conversation with the

FDA, the senior researcher told her it would take a concerted effort from all the mom's to get some attention on the children's issue by going to Congress and FORCING them to look at our serious concerns about our children. Last week Diane Griffith, Congressional Liaison with United Silicone Survivors of the World, sent a copy of P.J.'s April 28, 2000 letter to FDA Commissioner Jane Henney to Vice-President Gore's office. As a result a meeting was obtained with a bio ethicist who is a national policy advisor for Vice-President Gore. The meeting was held on June 8th, 2000 in the Old Executive Office Building

which is part of the White House complex. The meeting also included myself, an intern from Princeton, and a representative from the White House Office for Women. The points that were discussed in this meeting included the following: A brief history of breast implants 1976 "grandfathered" in as Class II devices 1988 reclassified as Class III devices due to increasing adverse events 1992 moratorium on gel-filled but exemptions made due to "public health need" 1998 FDA approves clinical trial for augmentation using gel-filled implants A copy of Dr. Zuckerman's 1992 Congressional report was submitted highlighting the following: 1. high failure rates and gel bleed 2. FDA delays and inaction 3. patients misled by FDA approved informed consent 4. violations of good manufacturing practice standards A copy of the 1997 Citizen's Petition to halt the implantation of gel-filled breast implants was submitted highlighting the following: 1. 70% failure rate and severe gel bleed (silicone found in the lymph nodes, liver, kidney, brain, etc.) 2. interference with mammography 3. second generation effects 4. some insurance companies refusing to insure breast implanted women A copy of the June 1997 speech delivered to the public hearing NIH Office of Research on Women Health Needs for the 21st Century in New Orleans at which I reported on a small survey of 100 breast implanted women in support groups across the country when asked if they had been diagnosed after implantation stated the following: 1.

68% reported peripheral neuropathy 2. 36% demyelinating neuropathy 3. 70% atypical neurological disease 4. 42% organic brain disease 5. 55% esophageal reflux 6. 63% gastro-intestinal dismotility, plus many other diagnoses and symptoms A summary was submitted of a June 30, 1997 conference call with Acting FDA Commissioner Friedman in which I asked the following questions: 1. Is it acceptable to the FDA that a non life saving device with a 70% or higher rupture or severe gel bleed rate to allowed to remain on the market? 2. Is it acceptable to the FDA that silicone gel can migrate to the

brain, the liver, the lymph nodes, the spleen, the kidneys, the reproductive organs, and the spinal fluid? 3. Is it acceptable that innocent children and our future generations may be harmed by this toxic defective device? A copy of the October, 1997 FDA letter denying the citizen petition stating they do not have sufficient information to change the current regulatory policy but stating "the public interest is not well served" was submitted. A summary of the November

1997 FDA meeting was submitted which included Dr. Ernest Lykissa, Forensic Toxicologist, who talked about his research documented low molecular weight silicones crossing the blood-brain barrier in mice and his research finding platinum releases from intact implants; Dr. Hardt, reported finding silicone in the brains of rabbits; Dr. Lu-Feng, Plastic Surgeon reported documenting high failure rates, and Dr. Arnold Starr, Neurologist, recommended that a case controlled clinical study be conducted to determine the true extent of neurological disease. In this meeting I asked the FDA to determine the answers to the following questions: 1. Is silicone, silica, or its components, a lipid soluble neurotoxin? 2. Does silicone, silica, or its components pass through the placenta and breast milk, with harmful consequences? 3. Do reports of increasing cases of multiple myeloma in young women with breast implants indicate a cancer latency factor? This meeting was attended by the FDA's platinum specialist Dr. Langone. A copy of the FDA's December 1997 letter to the President of the ASPRS was submitted asking for their help in increasing physician participation in studies on gel-filled implants, stating the FDA was streamlining physician paperwork requirements

in terms of data collection as an incentive. In other words, looking for more doctors to put more gel filled implants in women with less data collection. A copy of my April 1998 letter to the FDA documenting published research that could be used to predict a 50% failure rate at 8 years was submitted. The letter also pointed out the FDA's own booklet on breast implants quotes a manufacturer as saying "Our product history indicates an overall reported average rupture rate of approx. 1%. This does not include silent ruptures that may go undetected." I pointed out that the FDA and plastic surgeons seemed to agree that ruptured implants should be removed, but if it was silent, how could that occur? I enclosed Baylor College of Medicine research showing that platinum and low molecular weight silicones were being released from intact implants and can spread to all the major organs of the body. A copy of my address before the August 1998 FDA Modernization Public Meeting was submitted which included issues of lack of informed consent, consumer protection, and follow up on adverse event reporting. Again pointing out that women are not getting true informed consent and product information is misleading stating that complication are rare. A copy was submitted of the March 1999 letter I sent to the FDA asking for breast

feeding advice for a pregnant woman with aging polyurethane implants in light of FDA published research stating polyester urethane foam did present an unreasonable risk to health for the patient. The FDA's response was "It is not known whether breast implants affect a nursing infant. There is no data available." We have never had an advisory or recall on polyurethane covered implants. A copy was submitted of my September 1999 letter to the FDA asking "What is the safety standard that the FDA is willing to accept on local complications of implants?" The FDA's response was they do not have any performance standards. A copy was submitted of

the December 1999 FDA letter denying Ann Stansell's citizen's petition asking for a ban on gel-filled implants stating the FDA believes we have not proven that gel-filled devices present a substantial deception or an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury. This is proof the agency has gone from making the manufacturers prove safety and effectiveness, to making the consumer prove that a device is harmful. Buyer beware. A copy was submitted of the detailed suggestions (quoting from the Institute of Medicine Report July, 1999), I sent to the Office of Womens Health for the new FDA booklet 2000. I reported on the February 2000 conference which was the result of contacts made by Jama Russano initially and P.J. Brent ultimately, "Silicone Implants & Children's Health" held by Office of Women's Health, HHS, and attended by Dr. Ernest Lykissa and Dr. Langone, among others. A copy was submitted of the February 2000 letter to the FDA in response to FDA's letter to Congress in which they state "there continues to be a public health need for gel-filled implants", the FDA does not pre-set success or failure rates for categories of devices, and the manufacturers have ongoing five and ten year studies of gel-filled implants. It was pointed out to the Vice President's national policy advisor, these are not

"scientific" studies. A copy of my March 2000 testimony before the FDA's Public Hearing on Saline-filled Implants was submitted pointing out examples of lack of true informed consent. A copy of the manufacturers own study documenting a 68% complication rate at five years for augmentation patients and a 95.2% rate for reconstruction patients was submitted. May 2000 the FDA approves saline-filled implants as reasonably safe and effective. The only criteria for effectiveness appears to be that implants create a breast mound and after three years a high degree of satisfaction was reported to plastic

surgeons. A copy was submitted of the May 2000 letter I sent to the FDA stating preliminary data on research funded by CANDO shows platinum 5+ is being released from intact implants. The significance of this is, platinum 5 is in cisplatin. It is cytotoxic (kills cancer cells) and has documented toxic side effects to the peripheral nerves, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, bone marrow and can cause asthma. This is similar to Brockovich who discovered Chromium 6 toxic effects after a utility company claimed it was in a harmless less toxic form. The Institute of Medicine Report quotes Dow as saying the platinum in gel was presumably a "colloidal, elemental platinum

residual." A copy was submitted of the May 2000 FDA research showing 69% of women in their study had at least one ruptured gel-filled implant and 21% had gel outside the scar capsule. Memorial Day 2000, P.J. Brent grows weary from the struggle for the truth. A copy was submitted of the June 6th 2000 decision by England's Medical Devices Agency to advise women to have their Trilucent

implants removed after preliminary tests suggest genotoxic products may be created when soya bean oil breaks down inside the body. The advisory group were unable to exclude the risk of reproductive effects and agreed it was prudent to advise that pregnancy and breast feeding should be avoided prior to explantation. I pointed out the National Institutes of Health study of 13,500 breast implanted women has been completed for some time, but the results have yet to be released other than the life style data. We pointed out the reasons we felt this issue should be included in our nation's policy included the

following: 1. This is the most defective device ever produced. 2. The safety standard appears to be lower for devices. 3. Reform is needed at the FDA to make sure consumer and second generation effects are protected from toxic chemicals implanted in the body, accurate informed consent and product information is given, and repeated violations of good manufacturing practices do not occur. 4. The influence of the chemical companies, manufacturers, and plastic surgeons is similar to the influence to hide the truth we have seen in tobacco, agent orange, Gulf War syndrome, pesticides, Dalkon Shield, DES, and in the pertussis vaccine scandal. A small group of women have been working non-stop on this important women's health issue and that of our future generations. We need everyone to work together to hold the chemical companies, the manufacturers, the medical community, and the FDA accountable. Brent sued the maker of her breast implants (CBS) Fourteen year-old Brent has trouble walking. She suffers from a neurological disorder that requires her to sometimes wear leg braces. "I can't do a lot of things my friends do and they get kind of angry at that and a lot of people ask me about it," she says. She also has an intestinal disease and esophageal disorder. Her 13-year old sister suffers from the exact same problems. Their mother believes the implants she had while breast-feeding her daughters caused them to develop health problems, reports April of CBS affiliate WGNX-TV in Atlanta. "The black is the fungus that grew inside the implant in my body. It's called aspirgilus niger. It does not belong in the human body," says their mother, P.J. Brent. The implants she had were made of both silicone and saline. She got them in 1982 before problems with silicone implants were widely reported. Ten years later, she had them removed. "I don't understand why doctors don't inform their patients of this. I would have never chosen to breast-feed my child knowing the condition the implant was in," she says. Brent was offered a settlement from the maker of her implants after taking out a lawsuit against them. She refused their offer because it would have meant signing a gag order. Although there is little scientific evidence to support her claims, she says it's important to get the word out to other mother's whose children may suffer similar problems. "My question is, 'How many children are affected? Why aren't the doctors paying more attention and why isn't the FDA doing something about this?" she says. Dr. Goldstein says it's because there has been little research on the health risks of implants and breast

feeding. "Right now it's not clear if there's a casual relationship betweeen the presence of silicone and human disease in the form of breast implants or other silicone devices and I think it's something that requires more study," he says. In the meantime, Brent is leading the fight to get the government, implant makers and women to listen. Saline implants are the only kind currently allowed for cosmetic purposes. Although the shell is made of silicon, doctors say

We came in good faith to explain to the medical panel our concerns regarding the effects of implants on the second generation. To us this was the moral and ethical thing to do in light of the fact that my double-lumen implants were found to be leaking chemicals and were contaminated with micro-organisms and fungi upon explantation.
