Yosemite - brief report

We got home late last night from 4 days in Yosemite, and I'm too tired

to write much now, but if you're hesitating about visiting Yosemite

because of the GF diet, quit stalling and get in the car!

I contacted Delaware North, the company that holds the concession from

the National Park Service, about 12 days before we went. I received

replies from both the corporate offices and the head chef at the

Yosemite Lodge. They assured me that the Lodge restaurant and Food

Court would be able to accomadate us.

Since the main purpose of our trip was " camping " we only ate out 3

times, 2 lunches and 1 dinner. These meals were custom cooked for us,

and I am sure they were completely GF as well as quite good - and I

didn't have to wash the dishes in icy cold campsite water!

The head chef had prepared a memo on gluten-free cooking for his

staff, in consultation with me, but he had done most of the research

for it online before he sent it to me. Each day we had a different

contact person to talk to about the meal choices. They had also

ordered some Tinkyada pasta that we had one meal. He had

double-checked their in-house recipes and sent me a list of what would

be safe.

Best of all was the attitude of the staff: one lunch, because the Food

Court was quite busy, I said I'd just have a bunless burger and fries.

NO! The chef said there was no need for that, how about fresh fish,

sauted in a little butter? The fish was delicious, and the 5 yr old

got a GF hot dog and fries, which made him happy.

The grocery shops in the Valley also had plenty of GF basics on hand:

meat, fruit and veggies, eggs, dairy, rice, and some canned goods I

recognized as GF. One shop even had Amy's frozen vegetarian meals,

which said " Gluten-free " right on the label.

I think the key to our sucessful meals was the advance contact I had

with the chef: it gave him time to research the GF diet, prepare his

staff and order a few things for us. I used the " Contact " link from

the http://www.yosemitepark.com/ site where I booked our camping unit.

There are multiple restaurant/cafe sites in Yosemite, but I made our

request to only one facility to keep it simple for them. The can-do,

postitive attitude of the staff was a pleasure to deal with.

Yosemite Lodge: 2 thumbs up for GF dining!
