Guest guest
Hey All, Does anyone know of a site that tells about valsalva manuevers? Do they do anything about these when they are the cause of the bad headaches? My son has them and i'm wondering what they are going to do. Also his face has started swelling which is odd. Does anyone else have this symptom? Hugs to All, Vickie, Mom of decomp.3/3/00 with syrinx
Guest guest
Valsalva causes an increase in intercrainial presure ...Darlene posted awhile back about things that raise your icp ...and I thought it was great guidance ....so I'm reposting it here . Hope it helps .. Darlene wrote " in responce to several questions , i want to outline some of the activities that cause increases in inter-cranial presure . Normal healty brained people have no problems with these ICP flucuations ....but the obstruction that chairi creates means that for many ACMers , these " normal " fluctuations can provoke symptoms that range from mild to severe . these may be situations where you first notice your symtpoms as well . For those ACMers with continued problems with your CSF flow , caution should be employed when doing any of these activities if they provoke symptoms . This is a common mistake doctors make ( one of many related to ACM ) . Even a slight obstruction can create pressure on the cerebellar tissue , and there have been measurements of the amount of pressure and turbulent motion created on the tonsils with even a mild obstruction of normal CSF flow . Each person will have a pretty good idea of what they can tolerate and what gives them trouble . And remember , this is not a matter of continued increased intercrainal prssure ....which is a seperate problem .....this is the normally well tolerated fluctuation that comes with daily life . The activities known to increase inter-crainal presure ..... Breath holding Pushing , bearing down ( as in child birth or having a bowel movement ) * for a good explanation of this , refer to my report on Dr. Tators comments at the Canadian Syringomyelia Network Confrence in Toronto ( on their web pages ) . Blowing ....as in blowing up ballons or playing wind instruments . * one Neuro told me one of the worst cases of chiari he ever saw involved a bag pipe player ....I can well imagine * Bending over ( head lower than the heart ) Getting up from a reclining position quickly Lifting of weight , particularly with the arms Pulling downward with the arms Strenuous exercise Singing Diving " "
