Guest guest
Raena - Here's the deal. With the population explotion in this area, they needed to build a " sister " school to the school that Jacqui now attends (public school). This school is adjacent to her school. To " balance the load " so to speak (regular ed, GATE, sped), they need to move children to the new school. We made an issue about this last year (because they did this last year too), and wrote a very detailed letter as to WHY this change would NOT be good for Jacqui. I'm really BURNED by this because A) I have been ASKING about teachers for next year, and no one would give me answers...which tells me they KNEW about this!!! I have seen kids COME IN to the sped program at Jacqui's school...why is Jacqui being moved???? I have my suspisions, and I am EXTREMELY upset. I have put an untold number of hours, blood, sweat and tears into the last two years, and I DO NOT appreciate being shuffled around. My kid is NOT like every other kid...and I could give a shit if they have must " create an academic balance " . Here is the quote: " Students will be placed in classes based on the overall needs of each classroom. We must create academic balance by doing the following: balance the number of high, average, and below average students, balance the number of boys and girls, separate students who do not work or play well together, make sure each classroom has student leaders, balance the number of G.A.T.E. and special education students, and not overload any one classroom with behavior challenges " (ok, can you say RUN ON sentence?) This is a form letter...Not specific to our needs. So, you see... we all have to even out. We dont' have the skills to deal with these children, but by God we'll be balanced. I'm mad. I'm angry. and I will be for a while. And to answer your question about placement? I don't know how they can without calling an IEP meeting... This brings up an interesting point. Jacqui has a valid IEP until the end of December...I wonder how they think they are going to deal with THAT! I'm so tired.... Penny >>>>> >> Hey, I KNOW! Guest guest
Penny, they cant do this to you legally. I dont think so at least. If it says that Jacqui will be attending the school she is currently in then that is where she will stay until the IEP is changed.but have you looked at the new school? Maybe she would be better off there anyway. I wouldnt tell anyone that but maybe the chnge could be good. Or do you already know different? Jacquie H > >> Hey, I KNOW! Guest guest
Oh Penny, I was so hoping you wouldn't get that letter! Damn! I know how hard you worked last year to NOT let this happen. Guest guest
Changing her classroom, teacher or school is a change of placement. It cannot be done with holding an IEP meeting specifically for that purpose which must be stated in the notice of prior notification sent to advise you of the meeting. Such a change of placement would be in violation of IDEA and leaves the door wide open for the state dept. of ed. to come in and do some serious hand slapping. Write them a letter reminding them that Jacquie's placement is set forth in her IEP, which the team wrote and considered just a few short months ago, was based on HER needs as outlined in the provisions of IDEA. (read: nothing to do with district needs) If the school feels that there is a more optimal setting for meeting Jacquie's educational needs where her educational experience would be enhanced further with more support and opportunities then you would be open to a meeting with her team members to assess the potential benefits or impact such a change might have on Jacquie's education. (read: you better send me prior notice and you better not change placement without a proper IEP meeting cause I know more than you) Close politely and say thank you. (It may be necessary to bite your tongue but you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar) Good luck. who is considering an IEE for but has not decided yet. I know that many of the moms here are a lot more up on what goes on in the schools, so I will leave the advice on dealing with the IDEA stuff to them...I think I saw a wonderful reply by ...but I will say that I think this is really unfair, and worth fighting about. > My kid is NOT like every other kid...and > I could give a shit if they have must " create an academic balance " .> Numbers. Kids should never be just numbers. > And to answer your question about placement? I don't know how they can > without calling an IEP meeting... When is the move to CA coming up? Can you use that as another reason to keep her where she is...that it would be too many disruptions in her schooling to move her again? Or, maybe that would give them an incentive to put you off...I wish people could just be straight with each other. :-( You should be able to trust people who take responsibility for your child's life. Penny, Sounds like time to re-present your letter. (although, with the crap they've put you through this year, isn't it possible that the other school might have teachers who are more knowledgeable?) > > I'm really BURNED by this because A) I have been ASKING about teachers for > next year, and no one would give me answers...which tells me they KNEW about > this!!! Since when is that a criteria for placement?? I don't remember what type of program Jacqui's in. Here, it's either a special AI classroom for the more severe kids, or they are mainstreamed, or in the AI room and part of the day in gen ed with an aid. There is no 'balance'. They either belong in that type of classroom or they don't. Hopefully we will be getting a classroom just for aspie and hfa's in the future though (which will teach in a way that's more in line with how our kids learn and understand) > So, you see... we all have to even out. Probably call you in for one and say she's being moved. By the way, I think you can fight a placement change that you don't approve of. > I'm so tired.... I know you are. I certainly know the feeling. Hang in there, ((((Penny)))) Sue
Guest guest
I cannot believe they would move Jacqui..when she's done so well at her present school..can you call a CSE meeting and tell them you disagree?
