Hi Penny. Things haven't gone all that well for a while. Teacher

keeps calling CPS. Couple of weeks ago, she called for us to come

get Cassie because they could not " handle her " and when we got there

3 adults (teacher and 2 assistants) had her boxed in a corner by 2

tall partitions. And she was wet. The principal was there I guess

just waiting for us to make a scene. We just took her home (well

actually we took her to Mcs because she had not had lunch and

THEN we took her home :)- and did not send her back until last Friday

because......well of course a social worker was out here again after

about the 5th day. So she has to complete the remaining 14 school

days because of state law. We had a meeting today and they said they

are going to try a different approach even if it means just calling

us to come get her if she's getting too upset. I just need this

nightmare to end. They kept saying that they are " just doing their

job " yada yada blah blah blah. I said as little as possible to

avoid saying something that would just cause more problems. I don't

believe there was anything I could have said that would have made any

difference to them. They decided a long time ago that they are right.

You can't reason with that. I have ZERO faith in the system. They

had her pinned up like a cocker spaniel (something WE would have been

arrested for) and then attempted to justify it. Which is exactly

what I knew they would do. I can't tell you how much I wish I had

pulled her out in February after she was denied the Valentine

goodies. We've ALL suffered as a result.

Jacquie, I wish that I never had to send her back even for 1 day.

The social worker said she would take us to court if we didn't. We

told her about the way Cass was pinned in the corner and basically

all that came of it was that they " didn't know what else to do. " We

were even told by one person that we needed to get " past " that and

determine what needed to be done the next time there's a problem.

They still think that they did the right thing.

Thanks for the support. You've been through a lot of things too.

I've always thought YOU are pretty strong yourself. I am SO glad you

created this list. At one time or another we have all really NEEDED

it.

Oh my GOD.

That is inhuman. That is truly inhuman. It's appalling. I'm sorry I don't

fucking inhuman school employees??? What did this person SAY????

What a horrible place for you to be in, because my first thought would be

get her the hell out of there and just let her repeat the grade someplace

else...but then again, the LAST thing Cassie needs is to be left behind.

How AWFUL.

Fourteen more days.

God, Cinnamon, how you hold it together in the face of that is superhuman.

I'd have freaked out completely, crying and babbling, and made everything so

much worse. I totally admire your strength in what is truly a disgusting

situation.

I can't tell you how upset I am for you! If this were me (this is what I

would do if I were in the same position I don't know if it's an option for

you) I would go to school with her. If they are the ones that " can't handle

her " then your first priority is keeping her safe. Could this be an option

for you? If they don't like it that's too nad since they are the ones that

don't seem to be working " with you " then __________ them!

Do you have a plan in place for next year?

Cinnamon,

I can't believe they are putting you and Cassie through all of this

crap.....STILL! Is there anywhere else you can send her to school for next

year? Some other type of classroom where they may understand her more? (I

don't remember her current placement, sorry)

Have you decided if you're going to persue home schooling for next year?

I wish I could offer some help to you. I can certainly understand why

you're behind on mail, but if you need support or a place to vent, you know

where to find us!

Bear Hugs to you both.

You can get away with periodic visits to the class, but anything

more would probably be labeled as " disruptive " by them.

The HS plan is ready to go--except for that little " certified "

technicality ;) But I'll be taking care of that the first day the

state allows you to register for the next school year. Thanks .

I appreciate that Penny. Sorry I haven't been able to respond to

everyone sooner. I've been out looking for a place to live this

weekend. We decided that even though I'm HSing Cass next year--we

just want to be out of the current district. That eliminates

any " concerns " (translated: interference) they might have.

At the meeting we had, the lack of knowledge about autism was

overwhelming. Only 1 person (besides dh and me) had a clue.

Unbelievable but true.

Incredible isn't it? I told dh maybe the next time they send CPS

Think it would work?

Yep, Sue. Definitely going with the HS. I probably have more than

enough for the year. Since I'm not sure precisely what her needs are

(as far as teaching), I want to make sure I have all the bases

covered. When I look at how much I've bought and printed out--I've

probably covered the bases, the stands and the parking lot :)

Thanks.

Cinnamom, I've been wondering about you lately. I am so sorry and angered

to hear what has been going on. It does sound like the school department

needs a consistent behavior plan that can be agreed upon by the " team " . This

is something I would formally request. Your daughter does not deserve that

kind of treatment. I know I'm an extremist, but we are talking about

violation of her civil rights here. Pam :(

The one thing we agreed on was that if they see it's reaching a

point that they are unable to handle, they are supposed to call us to

just come get her. Of course once they start doing that Cassie will

figure it out fast and we will be picking her up 14 times :)

The bad thing about our " team " is there are so few people who seem

to know anything about autism. There was a psychologist at the

meeting Friday who was determined to explain exactly what an autistic

child absolutely will and absolutely will not do. If there's one

thing I've learned about autism it's that there are no absolutes.

and it is often WE-the parents who are the true " experts " .

uh-oh I feel a rant coming on I am a bit of an extremist

as well :) I shall shut up now. Thanks, Pam.

OMG Cinnamon! I understand that you don't want to make things worse for

her, but how did you get out of that room without hurting someone? This

just makes me ill. That is abuse, plain and simple. Did you tell CPS that?

They should be investigating the school, not you! Damn, I hope the next

few weeks go by very fast for you and poor Cassie. Let us know when it's

over. I think there are more than a few of us that would love to do a

letter writing campaign to your local newspaper. I can't express how angry

this has made me. I can't even imagine how you feel right now. Let us know

if we can do anything.

The best thing I could do was just keep my mouth shut. No small

feat ;) dh asked me if I thought they picked up on my demeanor.

When I asked him what he meant, he said " you looked pi**ed " . I was--

and still am. I know I probably made some faces and did some head

shaking. I caught myself at least twice with my eyes rolled in the

back of my head. I just kept telling myself " 14 more days--keep

quiet "

They SHOULD be investigated but I've heard it never works that

way. So just avoiding a scene that would have been pointless with

them seemed the best way to go. I may just climb up on the roof and

dance when it's over. Thanks, Amy.

Cinnamon:

I am shocked by the school's treatment of Cassie. This message was pretty

old so those fourteen days must be about half over. Hope she and you are

hanging in there.

I do have a hard time believing that you cannot pull your child out of

school any time you want, but I can see that it might be so much legal

bother etc that it might not be a reasonable choice.
