Hi,

Could people post to the group?

I am also curious about tethered cord and pregnancy. My nsg grimaced when I

asked, but no doc has advised against it.

Does anyone have experience with tethered cord and pregnancy?

Thanks,

from Massachusetts

<< Does anyone have experience with tethered cord and pregnancy >>

and others ....there is more than one type of teathering ....and Im

not sure my experience is typical ...i haven't seen others post a similar

experience ever . That said ...i have /had a tissue mass , that intwined the

lower sacral nerves and included a congenitally teathered cord at the normal

conus level ....and a cystic type protrusion /channel that communicated out

to the skin area . It was so long ago , i dont remember exactly what the

doctor called it ....but have since been told it is /was a spinal bifida

related structural problem .

what was odd , was both times i became pregnant , this mess got infected

.....and a huge golf ball /goose egg protruding out developed at the lumbar

/sacral juncture . Each time , the lanced , drained and packed the hole with

iodiform guaze for a week or two ...keeping it open through a drain .....and

gave me massive antibiotics .

the third time it returned ...a general surgeon thought it was a pylenodial

cyst , and scheduled surgery to remove it . He was astonished to find it

wasnt a pylenodial cyst ...but instead communicated with the spinal cord

....and those nerve roots were all entwined .

so ...I don't recall others having this occur and discussing it here ....but

it seems clear to me that pregnancy hormonal changes were involved somehow in

provoking the exacerbation and infections ect ...it only happened then ...and

reoocured with the pregnancys .

I also had another unusual tissue growth of the Gardners duct ( an

embrological structure that normally disapears during gestation ) ....again ,

this grew with the pregnancys and required extensive surgery each time

.....again , I've posted about this a few times during my 4 years on the list

.....and never run accross anyone else that had it develope ...yet another

weird obscure condition . Ive also tried to find info through pubmed or

medline ect on this one ....cant find much info at all anywhere ....but one

bit did seem like it could be related ....apparently all this goes haywire ,

the bifida , and gardeners duct resolution process ...both within a couple

days of each other in gestation ...about day 21 .

id be intrested in other folks with the same sorts of problems getting in

touch ...on or offlist .

sarah in paradise ....acm , bifida stuff and multiple sclerosis

Hi ,

My tethered cord symptoms worsened with each pregnancy as did my chiari

symptoms. Prior to my pregnancies I had relatively minimal symptoms that

occurred occasionally. I had very difficult pregnancies with severe

hyperemesis (nausea and vomiting) and was on IV fluids and bedridden for 5

months with each pregnancy. It was after my second pregnancy that my

neurological symptoms worsened dramatically, including leg weakness, pain,

and numbness,in addition to a number of other symptoms.

There is information in a couple of journal articles I have on tethered cord

in adults linking pregnancy with the onset or worsening of tethered cord

symptoms in some cases.
