I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree. I have checked Vera Pyle, Stedman's

Cardio/Pulmonary words, Google, Dorland's, and MTDesk and cardiomediastinum

does not exist. When I did a Google search, it asked did I mean

cardiomediastinal. If your employer is like mine, you would be required to

provide a source for cardiomediasnum and if you can't do that, then you can't

use the word. IMO you should transcribe it as cardiac mediastinum, but even

that is iffy. I looked up mediastinum in Stedman's Concise, and here is the

definition I found:

1. A septum between two parts of an organ or a cavity.

2. The median partition of the thoracic cavity, covered by the mediastinal

pleura and containing all the thoracic viscera and structures except the

lungs. It is divided arbitrarily into five parts: anterior mediastinum,

inferior mediastinum, middle mediastinum, posterior mediastinum, and superior

mediastinum. Syn: interpleural space, interpulmonary septum, mediastinal

space, septum mediastinale.

Origin

[Mod. L. a middle septum, fr. Mediev. L. mediastinus, medial, fr. L.

mediastinus, a lower servant, fr. medius, middle]

As you can see, it does not mention " cardiomediastinum " . Therefore, I think

I'd probably recast it to say " the cardiac portion of the mediastinum " .

However, like it says in my signature line, whoever signs the paycheck......

Thanks so much for supplying the source :) I'll add the word and the source

to my LRN. That's what's so great about this list.. Obviously we can't

afford to have ALL the available sources at our disposal, so it's so nice

that we can share this way. Please don't think I was questioning your

correctness on this matter, because that wasn't what I was doing at all. I

was simply pointing out that none of my references had cardiomediastinum

either, and my employer demands that if I use a word, I must be able to

document it. My employer is the " show me the money " type when it comes to

documenting words, which, of course, is as it should be.

Thank you so much for sharing your source :)

I love my LRN. It has taken quite a while to add the things I want to it,

but it's a great " all in one place " reference. However, I must say I've

learned the hard way to back all the entries up to a floppy. :/

A newer version eh?? I'll have to check that out.

Thanks for the chuckle regarding your choice of golf or adding to your LRN..

I guess I can understand why that would be a difficult choice if I liked golf

:)

Thanks for your input. That was my problem: I looked EVERYWHERE and I

couldn't document it anywhere!!

Thanks so much!

Yes, you're right Jan about employers (some) requiring documentation and

here is where I can document this:

Dorland's Radiology/Oncology Word Book/Editor: Sharon B. , CMT (pg.

52). I've heard/transcribed this more times than I'd care to recall. I

don't reply to posts unless I'm fairly confident of my answer and can

provide a reference source, if needed. I try to be helpful where I'm able

and don't or can't reply to every post if I can't be of any help to

someone - just clutters my inbox. Sometimes I wish I had a little more time

to clean that out - 411 messages to go through .. YIKES!

I'm surprised this is not in any Stedman's refs, but I maintain that it's

perfectly acceptable and widely used. I'm base this judgment on seeing it

in written form. As well, I did a *search* and got several hits, although

we all know we can't (or shouldn't) use this as a reliable source of

reference. I often check it if I'm REALLY stuck and, if it brings up

several hits, I go BACK to my library and re-check 'em all until I find it.

Thanks Jan!

Jan,

I'm *trying* to take the time to add to my LRN. I hear, from you and

others, that it's a great little tool. I have it installed and recently

upgraded to their newest version, but sad to report that I just can't find

the time to add to it!! I'm about ready for a vacation day or two, so

perhaps I'll take the time then. Let's see ... play golf or update my LRN

Have a good one!!
