HI ,

Hon all I can think of as far as IUDs are the copper rings with no hormones and it changes the chemistry of the uterus so the sperm doesn't fertilize the egg, but I'm wondering if it might be the Nuva Ring instead? Here's some information about it, (in case this is what you're talking about) but it does contain both hormones just like the BC pills of estrogen AND progesterone. I can't think of anything else it might be. I just don't have time to really check it out right now, (Grrrrr) but I'd 'think' this one at least would affect the same way as any progesterone.

NuvaRing® , the first hormonal contraceptive ring

What is it?

NuvaRing® is the first monthly vaginal ring for birth control. The flexible, plastic, transparent ring is a safe and effective contraceptive that is inserted into the vagina where it provides month-long protection against pregnancy. NuvaRing® is approximately 2 inches in diameter and about 1/8" thick. The ring is not a barrier device like a diaphragm or a cervical cap. It allows you to be spontaneous without having to think about birth control everyday.

How does it work?

The ring is the first to use a new drug delivery system which combines two hormones. Once inserted into the vagina, the ring releases a continuous low-dose of the female hormones estrogen and progestin over a 21-day period. The ring is then removed for seven days to make way for a menstrual period. Then a new ring is inserted. You insert the ring by squeezing the sides of the ring together and gently sliding it into the vagina. The ring must be inserted on or before the fifth day of the menstrual period in order to be effective.

If NuvaRing is used according to the directions, NuvaRing is 98-99% reliable. Your chance of getting pregnant increases if NuvaRing is not used exactly according to the directions.

Are there side effects?

Since the ring contains combined hormones similar to those found in the oral contraceptive pill, some of the risks and side effects may be similar.

Other possible side effects include:

vaginal discharge, vaginitis and irritation headaches weight change nausea.

Who should not use NuvaRing?

NuvaRing releases the same female hormones (estrogen and progestin) as the daily birth control pill. For this reason, if your doctor has told you not to take the pill than generally you should not be using NuvaRing either. However, it is important to always consult your doctor before choosing a method of birth control.

Who makes NuvaRing?

NuvaRing was developed by Organon Inc. with headquarters in West Orange, New Jersey and NV Organon, the Netherlands.
