Hi Debbie,

I have read something about the link between vasectomy and a condition called

autoimmune orchitis. I've just got some notes somewhere, but you can go to

www.google.com and do a search on orchitis. There are some links there

which i haven't checked out yet. Orchitis may have more to do with sperm

antibodies though, and Peyronie's syndrome may be the one linked to

vasectomy. this is an autoimmune disorder affecting the connective tissue of

the penis. Let me know if you find anything or need more info. I'll do some

research at work tonite too.

Debbie,

No personal experience, but second-hand, my friend's husband had one and was

in pain for over a month afterwards! Lots of swelling and not sure what all

else (he's shy to discuss w/ female friend of family). I also know my

husband refused, didn't like all the reports he read--but that was 17 years

ago, after I almost died with my youngest. I went in an had my tubes tied

instead.

Debbie,

This sounds so familiar. Many years ago I talked my husband into having a

vasectomy. We both went to the urologist for the consult. Before the

procedure we researched the subject and decided against it.

Debbie, I didn't read your earlier posts, but my doc

has never said anything about my having to stop the

pill with GD. Interesting.

I always thought vascetomies were so much less evasive

than getting your tubes tied. I found your post

really interesting... the whole auto immune thing.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks Terry and Elaine, I've found alot of information but haven't had time

to read all.

I am calling today and cancelling the consult for my husband. I told him

this all happened to quick and right now I have to find out what is going on

with me, before I make any decisions.

When website that seems to have alot of information is

www.familyplanning.net.

What I didn't like when reading about it is the fact after the vasectomy

when sperm aren't ejaculated they enter the bloodstream where antibodies are

produced to remove the sperm from the bodily system. When the body

activates defenses to ward off cells of its own making as after vasectomy,

the body becomes " auto immune " .

Problems associated afterwards include: kidney problems, kidney stones,

thyroid, joint disorders, heart, circulatory disease, diabetes, prostate

cancer. Two studies were done on the prostate cancer.

We are going to go the family planning route right now.

From the advice of my vascular doctor I should avoid any unnecessary

surgery, so we won't consider me. My doctor won't give me birth control

with the GD.

, I was on TAP when I got pregnant 4-1/2 yrs. ago. It wasn't

planned, so when they found out they put me on PTU which is suppose to be

safer than TAP. If you find a medical book it will tell you what the side

effects are.

My Gyn/ob happened to be a fertility specialist, the woman that is with him

the both of them practice alternative methods to hormones for menopause if

you want. He felt that having a hormone problem already with the GD that

adding more hormones like the pill will add to the problems. I have other

things that could contribute to that. I get migraines, and if you get

migraines it used to be they would talk you out of the pill. I've had a

blood clot when I was pregnant the last time, so that could be another

reason. And some other blood factors. I had a vascular doctor, endo, two

gyn/ob's and the head of staff of gyn/ob that all worked together when I was

pregnant. Alot of people I've read didn't like my endo, she watched me

closely and reduced my PTU as I progressed. I started on 600mg. of PTU

daily and before the baby was born was on a dose of 50 mg. My TSH never was

readable and she said being hyper for such a long time, it might not ever go

up or could take a long time. She was honest from the beginning and told me

that pregnancy and GD was a very black void area that doctors didn't know

alot about. We talked RAI but I never did it, she did make me mad because 3

months after having my son I started gaining weight. She told me most

people gain when they are pregnant, why are you gaining now? I took offense

to it, being my last doctor had a thing with overweight women. She is no

longer there.
