This is potentially significant. Did you happen to mention this to the Prodigy

people? Thanks.

Prodigy Meter

Hello,

A couple of weeks ago I felt that my blood sugar was getting low, so I tested

it with my Prodigy meter and got a result of 68 mg/dl. I ate a few grapes and

went on with what I was doing. A little later I developed all of the symptoms of

dangerously low blood sugar that I had learned to recognize over the years,

symptoms such as weakness, sweating, and light headedness. Again the Prodigy

gave me a reading of 68 mg/dl. Based on many, many years of diabetes I knew that

wasn't right, so I tested with my Accu-Check meter and got a reading of 34

mg/dl. Not wanting to die because of a faulty meter I threw that Prodigy meter

away and bought a new one. Since then I have been doubling up on all of my

tests, using both the Accu-Check and the new prodigy for each test.

While doing these double tests for several days I found that the two meters

agree closely as long as my sugar is either high or in the normal range, but

that the Prodigy will never give me a reading below 68 mg/dl, even when my

glucose goes lower than that. The two lowest readings that I have had were a 46

on the Accu-Check, with a corresponding 69 on the prodigy, and a 55 on the

Accu-Check with a corresponding 71 on the prodigy.

I put fresh batteries in the new prodigy, opened a fresh bottle of strips,

checked that the code number setting on the Prodigy matched the code from the

bottle of strips, and tested with a fresh bottle of test solution. The test

results were OK, but the prodigy still will not ever give me a reading below 68.

Has anyone else on the list ever had a problem like this?

By the way, while I was on the phone buying the new prodigy meter I asked

about the improved Prodigy, the one with increased vocalization, that is

supposed to be on the market soon. the sales person said that the new meter will

test blood pressure as well as glucose, will cost about $89, and is supposed to

be available by the end of the year. I certainly wouldn't bet on it actually

being available that soon, but i am at the top of the waiting list so they will

call me as soon as the new meter arives. I will let the list know as soon as

that happens.

Hello ,

The meter I’m talking about is not the newest one. I think the latest

version does not need to be coded and also has a blood pressure monitoring

feature.

Hi ,

At this time, the owner of Diagnostic Devices is not planning to discount

new meters. As for the upgrade, this is a whole new meter, the old one

cannot be upgraded. It will still be very affordable. For a new meter call

I don't think they have any up-dates. The new one with the blood pressure

capability is, I heard, $85. Withouthte BP thing, I think it is the same as

before-a free one with e purchase of $100 worth of strips or $39 without

Here is an article on the internet talking about the new senso-o-card, which

is coming out shortly and it also mentions the Prodigy. The senso-card is

supposedly more blind friendly even than the Prodigy.

A Meter That Talks Sense

By Mendosa

If you can read Diabetes Health, you don’t need a SensoCard Plus meter. But

there’s too good a chance that someone in your family or a friend does.

Talking meters for the visually impaired

The SensoCard Plus helps people who are blind or visually impaired by

speaking out their blood glucose results. It talks.

Move than three million Americans who have diabetes are visually impaired,

according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than

one-third

of us have diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness unless treated.

The SensoCard Plus is coming to America, but it’s not here yet. The U.S.

Food and Drug Administration started its review in September, according to

Bill

Cunningham of Cunningham Diagnostics in Sunderland, England.

However, a company in Budapest, Hungary, named 77 Elektronika manufactures

the meter. This company is not as well-known as it should be, because it

sells

most of its meters internationally through distributors that put their own

brand names on them. “Cunningham Diagnostics is our distributor for Great

Britain

and United States,” according to Christian Moldoványi, 77 Elektronika’s

international sales manager.

This meter is truly tiny. It’s not for nothing that they call it a card. It

is almost exactly the size of a dozen of my credit cards (don’t ask why I

have

so many) and weighs about the same, 2.6 ounces.

This little meter has perhaps even more impressive specifications. It takes

only a 0.5 microliter drop of blood and returns a result in 5 seconds. Only

Abbott’s FreeStyle, Becton Dickenson’s Logic, and Medtronic MiniMed’s

Paradign Link meters take less blood, and no other meter works faster.

The SensorCard Plus doesn’t just talk. Like regular meters it has a large

screen display that people helping the visually impaired can use. One large

button

controls the meter. Its memory holds 500 tests that you can download to a PC

with the help of an additional device called the LiteLink. Instead of using

visual cues, you calibrate the meter’s test strips with a code card.

In my evaluation of the SensoCard Plus my main concern was the

documentation. The owner’s manual is poorly written (or poorly translated

from Hungarian).

Of course, the meter also comes with an audio version of the manual, but it

too is inadequate. “The tape needs to be ‘Americanised’ and I am in the

process

of doing this,” Bill tells me.

When the SensoCard Plus becomes available in the U.S., it will be a great

gift for someone who needs it.

Sidebar: The Other Talkies

When the SensoCard Plus arrives in the U.S., it is likely to be less

expensive than the leading alternative. In England the meter kit sells for

£149 or

about $260. A box of 50 test strips retail for £23.50 or about $40. The

price in the U.S. hasn’t been set.

Roche’s Accu-Check Voicemate is the top talking meter on the American market

now. But compared to the SensoCard Plus it is bigger and heavier — and

considerably

more expensive. It retails for $500 to $600.

The less well-known alternatives are the Captek/Science Products’ Digi-Voice

Deluxe at $275 and Mini-DV at about $220. Both of these work only with the

old LifeScan Basic and LifeScan SureStep meters.

Another Sidebar: The Prodigy Meter

Diagnostic Devices Inc.

in Charlotte, North Carolina, has just introduced a new talking blood

glucose meter called the Prodigy. This remarkable little meter not only

talks, but

uses only 0.6 microliters of blood and tells your results in seven seconds.

Taidoc Technology Corporation in San Chung, Taipei, manufactures the meter

and in August 2005 obtained FDA 510(k) clearance to market it in the United

States.

Taidoc private labels the Prodigy for Diagnostic Devices, which has

exclusive rights to sell it in the United States.

Update

A reader, Steve in Princeton, N.J., writes that those who would benefit from

talking glucose meters may also benefit from talking bathroom scales. A good

one, he says, is the “Talking Phoenix” manufactured by

He says that they produce sturdy, reliable, highly functional and moderately

priced scales, and for the past three years has happily used not only their

talking bathroom scale, but also one of their kitchen scale models and one

of their line of miniscales.

Hi Becky and everyone on the list,

The Auto Prodigy is a different meter from the one with the blood pressure

cuff. The new Auto Prodigy is going to be available this week and codes

itself and uses it's own strips. The Prodigy meter with the blood pressure

cuff is called the Duo and is not available yet. Hope this clears up the

confusion.

Thanks for the clarification, Ruth. I don’t think I’ll switch to the Auto

because I order my strips from Speak to Me, and they put a Braille label on

the box with the code number. This way I don’t need sighted help to code my

meter. And I just recently bought a talking blood pressure monitor, so I

won’t need that update when it is available either.

grapes and went on with what I was doing. A little later I developed all of

the symptoms of dangerously low blood sugar that I had learned to recognize

over the years, symptoms such as weakness, sweating, and light headedness.

Again the Prodigy gave me a reading of 68 mg/dl. Based on many, many years

of diabetes I knew that wasn't right, so I tested with my Accu-Check meter

and got a reading of 34 mg/dl. Not wanting to die because of a faulty meter

I threw that Prodigy meter away and bought a new one. Since then I have been

doubling up on all of my tests, using both the Accu-Check and the new

prodigy for each test.

While doing these double tests for several days I found that the two meters

agree closely as long as my sugar is either high or in the normal range, but

that the Prodigy will never give me a reading below 68 mg/dl, even when my

glucose goes lower than that. The two lowest readings that I have had were a

46 on the Accu-Check, with a corresponding 69 on the prodigy, and a 55 on

the Accu-Check with a corresponding 71 on the prodigy.

I put fresh batteries in the new prodigy, opened a fresh bottle of strips,

checked that the code number setting on the Prodigy matched the code from

the bottle of strips, and tested with a fresh bottle of test solution. The

test results were OK, but the prodigy still will not ever give me a reading

below 68. Has anyone else on the list ever had a problem like this?

By the way, while I was on the phone buying the new prodigy meter I asked

about the improved Prodigy, the one with increased vocalization, that is

supposed to be on the market soon. the sales person said that the new meter

will test blood pressure as well as glucose, will cost about $89, and is

supposed to be available by the end of the year. I certainly wouldn't bet on

it actually being available that soon, but i am at the top of the waiting

list so they will call me as soon as the new meter arives. I will let the

list know as soon as that happens.

Dave, The new Prodigy is out. The price for the strips is about $20 no

matter whom you purchase it from.

Prodigy meter

Hi,

I had posted this, but never saw it show up. If it appears again please

accept my apologies. A few on the list are more in touch with the

Prodigy meter, and I'm wondering if they have any idea when the updated

model, which is supposed to be more accessible, is expected to be

available? Also, in the mean time, before I find a place to purchase the

meter and strips through one of the promotions that are bound to be out

there, who might have the best price right now on buying a single bottle

of strips? Many thanks.

Hi,

I didn't no it was out already. Do we have to

purchase this meter again or do we trade our old

one for a replacement one. If not, then where

can we get this new one from and how much it cost?

It is not that much more accessible. You still cannot set the time and

date; yes, if you buy the cable, you can do the compouter thing, but I

don’t think JAWS reads it. Try: diagnosticdevices.com

Re: Prodigy meter

Just to be sure, this is the meter with improved accessibility, right?

And, is it considerably more accessible, in that we can replay readings

and access the downloaded data/readings? Can we also adjust settings

such as time and date? Where's the best place/site to get the best deal?

Many thanks.

The new one is out? I thought that wasn’t coming out until this summer.

Can you tell us more about it?

Becky
