Guest guest
Hi, I was initially told that I had Stage III Colon Cancer until I went for a PET Scan and it indicated that there could be 2 " hot " lymph nodes in my abdomen. I was therefore restaged as Stage IV; I myself and still hoping that that the two lymph nodes are either a false positive or are eradicated via the chemo that I'm on now. I was told that the PET scans pick up pretty much everything I'm hoping that in my case that they are playing it safe treating me assuming the lymph nodes are cancerous. Bear in mind that my CAT Sscans were completely clean. The only way to be truly sure is via biopsy. -Ken > > > my mom had a colon resection two years ago, and had two > positive > > nodes. she had chemo every other week for six months and > responded > > to it well, with no serious side effects. now, two years later, > her > > CEA has been rising but so far the CT scan has not revealed any > > lesions or tumors, although the oncologist thinks it may only be > a > > matter of time. in any case, when she had the chemo she was 84, > and > > did pretty well with it. > > > stage 3 - comments on chemo > plan > > > > > > > > > My mom (72 years old)had her colon resection on 8/25, and was > > told > > > she had 4 positive lymph nodes, which put her at stage 3. > The MD > > > plans on treating her with 5FU and leukovorin, 5 days on, 28 > days > > off > > > for 6 months. Guest guest
Hi Ken, How long in between your original diagnosis as stage III and the pet results indicating possible " hot " nodes? Sorry if I missed it, but what and how long was your chemo protocol? Also, what prompted the pet scan-was your CEA elevated? Thanks you for sharing! Guest guest
Hi Rich, The original diagnosis came on July 30 (a shock as I'm only 33). I immediately scheduled a second opinion at MSK here in NY and was diagnosed w/probable Stage IV about 4 weeks ago. I guess part of MSK's protocol is to test everything henceforth the PET Scan (nothing to do with my CEA). Right now I'm in the middle of CPT-5FU-Le triplet. Hopefully when I get re-scanned at the end of October we can talk about surgery. Guest guest
my mom had a CT scan which showed no cancer, but meanwhile her CEA has been rising steadily. so far the onc hasn't ordered a PET scan but I think we're going to seek one. but I have heard of situations where the results of the blood tests and the scans are inconsistent, and while a PET scan may show things that a CT scan won't, false positives are sometimes a problem with them. stage 3 - comments on chemo > plan > > > > > > > > > My mom (72 years old)had her colon resection on 8/25, and was > > told > > > she had 4 positive lymph nodes, which put her at stage 3. > The MD > > > plans on treating her with 5FU and leukovorin, 5 days on, 28 > days > > off > > > for 6 months. Guest guest
Hi Ken, thanks for responding to my post. If you don't mind I would love to ask you some more questions, as we are heading down to MSK on 9/30 to get a second opinion for my mom. We are scheduled to see Dr. Veach. Any suggestions on questions or anything else that would help us be best prepared for this visit, so we can make the most of it? Also curious, if MSK recomended something different than your onc. or just agreed on the treatment. Any information would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I am in upstate NY, do you live in NY also? Thanks, Theresa > > > > > > my mom had a colon resection two years ago, and had two > > > > positive > > > > > nodes. she had chemo every other week for six months and > > > > responded > > > > > to it well, with no serious side effects. now, two years > > > later, > > > > her > > > > > CEA has been rising but so far the CT scan has not revealed > > any > > > > > lesions or tumors, although the oncologist thinks it may > > only > > > be > > > > a > > > > > matter of time. in any case, when she had the chemo she > was > > > 84, > > > > and > > > > > did pretty well with it. > > > > > > stage 3 - comments on > > chemo > > > > plan > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My mom (72 years old)had her colon resection on 8/25, > > and > > > was > > > > > told > > > > > > she had 4 positive lymph nodes, which put her at stage > > 3. > > > > The MD > > > > > > plans on treating her with 5FU and leukovorin, 5 days > > on, > > > 28 > > > > days > > > > > off > > > > > > for 6 months. Guest guest
Hi ho there neighbor, I'm also in NY, in Stamford to be exact. I went down to Sloan as well...I really like the doctors and facility, although I'm a bit daunted by the city. (I'm originally from a small town in Georgia.) It sounds like your gonna be on the same regimen as I am, and it ain't too bad really. I'm currently post surgery, undergoing 5fu/luk. treatments, two more to go! I generally feel abit run down, but all in all can't complain. (Ohh I try, but who really listens anyway? hehe) Btw, I'm 35 and was also shocked to get the news. I was originally diagnosed stage 3, but after the surgery they downgraded it to stage 2 because it hadn't been as bad as they thought. I'm hopeful that you get similar news. Good luck to you. Guest guest
Hi Mike, We live right outside of Albany, in a town called Voorheesville. My parents live near by in Delmar, and it is my mom that has the stage 3 colon cancer. I'm am shocked at the number of young people that have this cancer. What a pleasant suprise to be downgraded, good for you. I fear the opposite for my mom, but am trying to keep optimistic. Who did you see at Sloan? Was it just for a second opinion or are you treated there? The only info about treatment (and he also said 5FU and luk) we have is from the oncologist when he visited herin the hosp. after surgery when she received the news that 4 of 16 nodes were positive. We have an office app't with him on the 29th of this month and the next day we go to Sloan. Any info you can share about your Sloan experience would be appreciated. How we can get the most out of the second opinion visit? Thanks, I hope the best for you, Theresa > > > > > > > > my mom had a colon resection two years ago, and had > two > > > > > > positive > > > > > > > nodes. she had chemo every other week for six months > and > > > > > > responded > > > > > > > to it well, with no serious side effects. now, two > years > > > > > later, > > > > > > her > > > > > > > CEA has been rising but so far the CT scan has not > > revealed > > > > any > > > > > > > lesions or tumors, although the oncologist thinks it > may > > > > only > > > > > be > > > > > > a > > > > > > > matter of time. in any case, when she had the chemo > she > > > was > > > > > 84, > > > > > > and > > > > > > > did pretty well with it. > > > > > > > > stage 3 - comments > on > > > > chemo > > > > > > plan > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My mom (72 years old)had her colon resection on > 8/25, > > > > and > > > > > was > > > > > > > told > > > > > > > > she had 4 positive lymph nodes, which put her at > > stage > > > > 3. > > > > > > The MD > > > > > > > > plans on treating her with 5FU and leukovorin, 5 > days > > > > on, > > > > > 28 > > > > > > days > > > > > > > off > > > > > > > > for 6 months. Guest guest
Hi Rich, To be perfectly honest w/you once the colorectal doctor here in Long Island told me it was cancer. I went straight to Sloan as it is one of the world's best. Dr. Veach is not my doctor but from what I here every doctor in that area is top notch. My dealings w/MSK has been nothing but positive. If you need additional infor or if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. kenneth_odonnell@... Guest guest
Hi Theresa, In response to your inquires, I went to Sloan for a second opinion. I initially went to stown, and although the doctor and facility were good, the treatment they proposed was not acceptable to me. My doctor is Dr. Guillem. I think he and his staff are very good, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. One of the male nurses was extremely abusive to one of the older patients there. If I told you what actually occurred, you would be very shocked. I turned him in, but am not sure what became of him. He was the exception however. Everyone else was extremely pleasant. I'm going back for xrays and checkup on Nov. 14 & 21. I had to get a temporary illeostomy during my surgery, and will hopefully be getting it reversed sometime this year.
