I don't think total avoidance is realisitc. Have you tried whey low? I'd rather have natural sugar than an artificial sweetener any day. They are finding that natural sugar is actually medium glycemic now, not high as they once believe anyway. If you wanted to follow South Beach to a "T" I would say for phase 1 it's a no. But I think phase 2 it's ok if that's all you use it. I really think they just don't want people going crazy with it.

Really wish they would update SB for many foods, actually, because I think they still say watermelon is a 'no' even phase 2. But the glycemic load is so low for that fruit, and also the nutrient content is so high.

Been on SB for about 4 weeks and have lost about 17 pounds. Just cannot find a sweetener for my coffee that I can even remotely tolerate (Stevia, Equal, Splenda, etc....) Is a teaspoon of unrefined sugar permissable with a cup of coffee, or is completely staying off the sugar the key component? Thanks and Happy New Year!TomReminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones-and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats.
